US becoming a colonial power: Wesley Clark

[ MONDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 2003 09:08:56 AM ]

WASHINGTON: The United States is well on its way to becoming a colonial power if President George W Bush does go ahead with plans to attack Iraq, a former Nato supreme commander said on Sunday.

General Wesley Clark, a former Nato supreme commander and a potential Democratic candidate for president, told a Meet the Press programme on NBC that Saddam Hussein was "finished" and having gone so far, the US could not change its plans to remove him.

"We are at a turning point in America's history. We are about to embark on an operation that is going to put us in a colonial position in the Middle East following Britain It is a huge change for the American people and what this country stands for, he said. The Bush administration, he said, has not respected its allies and that is why it finds itself without the support of many Nato allies and even in those countries prepared to support the, public opinion is against the war. , could have been contained without war, he said.

Clark also warned against a civil war in after the present regime is removed because of the ethnic and religious divisions in the country--Kurds in the north, Shiites who constitute the majority in the country, and Sunnis who now wield power.

This little "pipsqueak in camo" doesn't have a clue!

Colonialism is a ghost of the last two centuries.

Liberation theology, once a monopoly of the religious/communist left, has been hijacked by George W. Bush.

He will implement his version of this policy and the world will be pleasantly surprised!

Do you think that General Wesley Clark understands that to be a colonial power we would have to colonize a geographical area? President Bush is for regime change not colonization.

Let's see....wasn't it Iraq that was attempting to colonize Kuwait.

I propose that Clark should be appointed dog-catcher in Kosovo. He can assume the title: El Fideldo....

Rush had a clip of Clark on his program today. Talked about the reason for France and Germany acting the way they do is because the Bush Administration is arrogant with them.

Clark -- Hate American/Hate Bush -- also said that Iraq was an elective operation like surgery and that Korea was the real threat.

Wanna bet if we were going into N. Korea, that Clark would be saying that we should be going into Iraq and not N. Korea.

Of all people to call this Administration arrogant! Did Clinton go to the UN on Kosovo?

The Ultimate Perfumed Prince. And speaking of cowboys, who was it that twice tried to start a war with Russia? First he wanted to bomb their observation ships in the Aegean, and then he tried to start a firefight at the airport.

Clark was just about at his level of competence when he supplied the armor from Fort Hood that Reno used at Waco.

Imho, we should re-colonize the entire arab world.

Then again, we would have to bring their culture into the 20th century. Maybe even the 21st century. Nah, never mind.

Um, about NATO and the "many" countries against us, there are three in Europe: Belgium, Germany, and France. Let's see, Belgium is insignificant, Germany is home to Hitler, and France is as good at fighting as it is at bathing. Russia is against Iraq because it wants its own chance for power in Iraq--the oil fields it was promised.

Sorry, I believe Bush when he says he wants a secure Iraq. Not colonial power. Not oil. Not Christianization (as Tariq Aziz seems to think). Clark is either lying or stupid...or both.

Just like most democrats, liberals, and lefties.

Somebody get Clark a refill on his Geritol and stick him in a rocker in the corner while the rest of us get on with the business of saving the world from the terrorists.

Hey, the man has a point. We ARE about to become a colonial power in the Mideast. This is exactly why I was glad Bush the first did NOT push on to Baghdad--and why I support the proposed war with some very grave reservations. Not mainly about the chances of victory, but about the messy aftermath that awaits.

I would have thought Clark's escapade into the Balkans placed us on the road to colonialism. Oh that's right the troops were to be back in 18 months. I must have missed their return.

We'll be in the Balkans longer than the Romans if the Eurotrash have a voice.BTW Gen Clark, if we're going to play colonial power we'll play it in a location that has some importance to our interests. Iraq is in the seat of terrorist development, sits astride important communication routes, is in a place to threaten allies, and yeah it has oil.The Balkans? Well if you were going to give Europe an enema, the Balkans is where you'd put the pump.

That's Wesley Clark.. younger brother of Ramsey Clark.

Or at least he might as well be. Another crackpot who uses his army resume to try to spout political nonsense. Maybe he had too many artillery shells blow up near him. His brain is on fire.

I think Wesley Clark is probably responsible for the largest amount of dissension in NATO. Leading an organization that was chartered as a defensive organization into an offensive bombing campaign against former allies is not the way to win a popularity contest. Any opinion he or his fellow traveler from Arkansas should be taken with a large dose of salt.

Only a Clinton protege could get things so confused. In Kosovo, we acted to partially undermine a state with legitimate claims to sovereignty, Serbia, by forcing it to accept an Albanian protectorate within its borders. There is no question that further conflicts will erupt in the future.

In Iraq we are acting to rid a sovereign nation of undemocratically imposed tyrant so that the Iraqis will be able to establish a legitimate form of self-rule. General Clark's statement is like saying we set up a colony in Germany when we helped the Germans get rid of Hitler and set up the GDR.

Ridiculous.

We should "hand off" the Balkan mess to Germany and France. They deserve it.

Remember that his title is generalissimo, not general.
We are on the verge of war and this tin plated weasel is out campaigning as a stealth demoncrap candidate. He reminds me of some banana republic dandy all set to sell out whatever scruples he may have had for personal ambition. He should wear a cocked hat with a weasel tail brocade.

Perhaps Belgium can be persuaded to charge Clinton and Generalissimo Clark for war crimes committed during Operation Storm and Operation Thunder since they have taken it upon themselves to be the world's court.

But then, Clinton and Clark are heroes not criminals in the Belgians view, right?
