Man facing court over noisy American flag

A Michigan man is facing possible court action because his American flag is too noisy.

Ray Saelens has been summonsed for violating a noise regulations in Chesterfield Township, Macomb.

It's believed the summons follows a complaint from a neighbour, who claims the flapping noise made by the 18ft by 12ft flag is keeping him awake at night.

Mr Saelens paid £2,400 to install the flag and 50ft flagpole behind his home after the September 11 attacks.

He even changed from using a nylon flag to a polyester flag to try to keep the flapping noise down, reports The Macomb Daily.

Mr Saelens said: "To me, the noise of the flag is the voices of everyone who's died for this country.

"Never in a million years did I think I would bother someone by flying a flag.

Chesterfield police spokesman Jim Gates said the flag dispute is unprecedented, and said they had no choice but to issue the summons after someone complained about the noise.

I think his neighbor needs to see what real noise is all about.

You can leave the flag up if it is lit. (I imagine lights would not be appreciated either)

His neighbor is obviously an America-hater.

I'd like to expose his neighbor to the noise in my 'hood. It'd give him something real to whine about.

Have you ever heard an 18ft by 12ft flag snapping in the wind? It's like firecrackers.

All it would take to cure it is a bunch of 1/4 inch holes in the outer third of the flag. That disrupts the wind flow and it won't snap.

That noise is a patriot's symphony. Beats a bell tower that ding-dongs every 15 minutes..LOL

Never heard this firecracker noise, sounds more dulled to me and my reference is a 40 foot by 28 foot flag at a local auto dealer.

Maybe the whiners should close the street and make the area a no flight zone too. Can't have that noise either, unless of course it's your stereo playing Islam's top 40 at 150 decibels...LOL

Yeah, drilling a few holes sounds like a good idea....a win/win for all concerned.

Flag owner ticketed for its loud flapping

Associated Press
Feb. 7, 2003 08:14 AM

CHESTERFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. - It's a flap over a flapping flag.

A man who installed a 50-foot flag poll after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks was ticketed after a neighbor said the flag's flapping made too much noise.

Ray Saelens says the sight and sound of an American flag whipping in the wind has special meaning.

"To me, the noise of the flag is the voices of everyone who's died for this country," the 51-year-old mason told The Macomb Daily of Mount Clemens for a story Thursday.

But next-door neighbor Mark Grucz complained, saying the flapping of the flag bothered him, and police issued Saelens a warning.

In response, Saelens switched to a polyester flag designed to be quieter. "Never in a million years did I think I would bother someone by flying a flag," he said.

On Monday, a police officer cited him for violating the local noise ordinance.

"He could hardly look me in the eye," Saelens said.

Township police spokesman Jim Gates said the dispute was unprecedented, and the department had no choice but to issue a ticket when someone complains about noise.

It is up to the court to decide between the neighbors, he said.

Meanwhile, Saelens says he will fight to keep the flag flying.

"You're going to have to pry it out of my hands," he said.
