Man facing court over noisy American flag
A Michigan man is facing possible court action because his American flag is too noisy.
Ray Saelens has been summonsed for violating a noise regulations in Chesterfield Township, Macomb.
It's believed the summons follows a complaint from a neighbour, who claims the flapping noise made by the 18ft by 12ft flag is keeping him awake at night.
Mr Saelens paid £2,400 to install the flag and 50ft flagpole behind his home after the September 11 attacks.
He even changed from using a nylon flag to a polyester flag to try to keep the flapping noise down, reports The Macomb Daily.
Mr Saelens said: "To me, the noise of the flag is the voices of everyone who's died for this country.
"Never in a million years did I think I would bother someone by flying a flag.
Chesterfield police spokesman Jim Gates said the flag dispute is unprecedented, and said they had no choice but to issue the summons after someone complained about the noise.
(a) It is the universal custom to display the flag only from sunrise to sunset on buildings and on stationary flag staffs in the open. However, when a patriotic effect is desired, the flag may be displayed twenty-four hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness.
I'd like to expose his neighbor to the noise in my 'hood. It'd give him something real to whine about.
All it would take to cure it is a bunch of 1/4 inch holes in the outer third of the flag. That disrupts the wind flow and it won't snap.
