OAKLAND - Gathered in the eerily quiet lobby of the North County Jail -- closed last year because of budget cuts -- grim-faced law enforcement officials Monday said raising the state's vehicle license fee is the only way to ensure basic police protection is preserved.

Of course they cut police; but will they touch the teachers' unions, or Fish and Game?

BTW, when they cut sheriff's departments, then they'll say that they're too expensive and can SAVE MONEY relying upon regional police. Your last lifeline to an elected law enforcement officer, accountable to your Constitutional rights, will be gone.

Never let it be said that the Slave Party doesn't know how to take advantage of a budget crisis by putting the screws to the taxpayer.

Police do not have a legal obligation to protect individuals, as demonstrated by court decisions. So, more funds does not necessarily translate to more protection of individuals (although it may translate to more police and as a byproduct, help the donut and coffee shop industry). Expand the budget cuts and let people buy more guns. More guns, less crime.

'"A literal breakdown is coming," said Alameda County Sheriff Charles Plummer.'

I think there's a spelling issue there. I think it should read "A liBeral breakdown is coming.

Same old fear tactics that the state of Oregon used/is using in trying to get their massive tax/fee increases in.

Oregon is actually freeing criminals after their left wing lost their stealth tax increase referendum/vote.

The beauracrats in Oregon have declared war on the taxpayers. We won't give them more of our tax dollars so they're cutting essential services rather the th BS pet projects that Government isn't supposed to be doing anyway.

Well, we have the same threats being issued at us by the rats.

Apparently this vehicle triple the fees thing is doa in the water. Davis has backed away do to some promises to him by some strong and conservative Republicans in our state senate. On the senate floor Monday, 3 Febuary.

It is going to be a bloody war in the three West Coast states as they try to tax us into socialist hell.

We need to keep each other posted on what is going on our state as the lefties in the other two states will try the same BS.

Here's what they could do, and increase revenues and safety both together. Require a CDL [Commercial Driver's License] for anyone who operates a vehicle over 3000 pounds curb weight. Another thing they could do is enforce the law with a special emphasis on moving violations. With a CDL, you will lose your license for just about any trivial infraction of the law. It's strict, it's tough, and it's expensive and requires special driving skill and knowledge to get in the first place. No exemption for light trucks or SUVs.

So the police are holding citizens hostage with the threat of extortion and reduced protection if they don't jack up their own taxes for them. Its too bad we can't arrest them for doing something which would get a private individual thrown in prison if he attempted to do the same thing. As usual one set of laws for the elite and another set of laws for every one else. Why do you think an otherwise middle class guy like Tony Soprano justifies breaking the law? According to him hey if the government doesn't respect its own laws they don't have a right to hold me accountable if I look out for my own interests. Thanks to California law enforcement we're getting to the point where law abiding citizens might have to fall back on their own devices to keep themselves safe. Its no thanks to government officials who act like we owe them a peasants' tribute instead of acting like the public servants they're supposed to be.

That is not true...below is a paragraph taken from an e-mail received from Tom McClintock...go to his web site and find more information.

Last week, local government officials said they “already” were reducing police and fire protection. That’s not because of the car tax.

In fact, local governments have never lost even a penny of revenue in the five years since the car tax was first reduced. It would take a majority of the legislature to do so, and before the local government horror stories are given any credence, I challenge them to name even one legislator who supports such a measure.

Oregon Mag on exactly that...politicians punnishing us for not giving in...

Unfortunately, G'Pa, you guys down South have a much larger Urban population, non-tax-payers, that don't want their services cut. You may have a real task on your hands.
