STOCKHOLM -- Has Hans Blix suddenly grown a backbone? Last week, the Swedish diplomat and chief U.N. weapons inspector told reporters that it's "clear" Iraq has "violated the bans of the United Nations in terms of imports." Western journalists have reported that those imports include missile parts, but Mr. Blix says it is not clear at this time whether they are related to weapons of mass destruction.

I believe that his newfound back bone is directly linked to a meeting with the Bush administration early last week. At this meeting Mr. Blix said that following the report on the 27th he would give the Bush administration his next report in March. He was told "not to bother", it "wouln't be necessary", i.e. come march there won't be an Iraq worth investigating. A couple days later he is searching one of saddam's palaces and the the next day, as if by magic, he actually finds something. He's only walking with a spring in his step because the ground in too hot to walk slowly.

I have never understood the concept of lying, cheating and obfuscating - for the glowing goals of world peace, tranquility and neighborliness.
What do these people think about themselves? Do they ever, late at night, realize what conniving, self-serving scumbags they are?
History has been too kind to certain Swedes like Blix. They have avoided the worst disasters of this century by blithely turning a blind eye to the evil around them. It's bad enough that they don't make a stand to fight evil. But when they actively hog-tie those wishing to fight it.....if it were up to me - I'd hand the little frik a placard with "World Peace" on it - and shove his stupid a%% across the Iraqi front lines at gunpoint - to get his just reward.
But we're just all too civilized to punish any of the guilty anymore.

What do these people think about themselves? I wonder the same. I know that Quisling was Norwegian, but I would think that Swedes would be well aware that those people who work with, and enable boodthirsty tyrants, are not looked upon favorably by history.

What do these people think about themselves? Do they ever, late at night, realize what conniving, self-serving scumbags they are? That was probably rhetorical, but too interesting to pass on. I think they generally view their behavior as a necessary compromise to either transcend or counter ours. They probably vacillate between the two.
They likely view our unilateral use of force as shortsighted relative to their vision of some kind of collective world legal system. They may recognize that we could quickly eliminate the axis of evil, but in their minds that would be a long term set back to a real war on terrorism. I think they believe the latters only winnable through their vision of collective world governance. I suspect that at times, they simply dismiss us as naïve and treat us as the biggest child in the playpen that needs to be managed with the others. (Transcending our behavior).
Other times, I think they see our willingness to dismiss them as the threat to them that we are, and they act to undermine our authority and power. But in their mind, theyre acting for the greater good.

Quisling was a Norwegian, but Sweden didn't need a Quisling -- it collaborated with the Nazis from the start.

Very interesting comments. I had not thought of it that way, but you could be on to something. Thanks!

What an idiot dupe Blix is. He's the kind of man who can't see beyond the end of his nose. He's just plain stupid - which of course is why Iraq insisted on him for the job - and why the UN went along with the selection. I pray that Bush sees him for what he is.
