To determine this year’s winners, a panel of 52 radio talk show hosts, magazine editors, columnists, editorial writers and media observers each selected their choices for the first, second and third best quote from a slate of six to nine quotes in each category. Each received a paper ballot in late November and returned it within two weeks.

Now, the winning quotes in 17 award categories:

Media Hero Award

I just became aware of the following commentary from Bill Moyers, and have some questions and comments for him.

1)“George W. Bush believes he now has a mandate." Why wouldn't he? He is the president and his party controls everthing. The Republicans were elected by the people.

2)"That agenda includes the power of the state to force pregnant women to surrender control over their own lives." Abortion is an issue that splits our country in half, which is to say half the country might not see this as a bad thing.

3)"It includes using the taxing power to transfer wealth from working people to the rich." What are working people? I work and pay a lot of taxes. I am far from the highest tax bracket. Also, the rich already pay a disproportionate (TOO MUCH) share of taxes. The last time I checked, it seems that our tax code already moves wealth to poor from rich. Being wealthy, Mr. Moyers already knows this.

4)"It includes giving corporations a free hand to eviscerate the environment and control the regulatory agencies meant to hold them accountable." Corporations are aware that their best long term interest are tied to the existence of earth, and will preserve it. The environmental movement lacks credibility due to its abandonment of true, hard scientific facts in many cases. Look at global warming and Kyoto protocol debates for examples.

5) “Above all, it means judges with a political agenda appointed for life. If you like the Supreme Court that put George W. Bush in the White House, you will swoon over what’s coming." maybe, maybe not. And, this is nothing new- remember the Warren court? Also, the supreme court did not put Bush in the White House. The electoral process did. Independant vote recounts in Florida by major media have verified this.

6) "And if you like God in government, get ready for the Rapture...." The Constitution is quite clear on the matter, and unlike the Democrats, the Republicans have actually read it.

7)“So it’s a heady time in Washington, a heady time for piety, profits and military power, all joined at the hip by ideology and money." Hey- that doesn't sound too bad! cohesion at the highest levels!

8) "Don’t forget the money.... Republicans out-raised Democrats by $184 million" Mostly from small donations from many "working families" unlike the Democrats, who take millions from trial lawyers, celebrities and corporate executives looking for favors.

Quite a bargain at any price.” They didn't "buy" the monopoly they won it by being much more relevant to the needs and wants of the voters. If the majority of voters agree with their agenda, does this make it radical?

I was shocked by the election results myself, but reading this intellectually dishonest commentary from a major media figure dissappointed me to no end. It is like Moyers is just emoting rather than taking the time to think. Does he actually know what he is talking about? This column screams NO!!

Well, here's a question for all of you. These quotes are hilarious. But what are conservatives doing to change the reality of the media tilting left? Pointing out a problem is one thing (and good for fundraising - the MRC's annual dinner is quite the gala). But what are they doing to solve the problem? Most young conservatives I know with an interest in journalism are actually interested in being pundits. They don't want to work for small town papers or TV stations, work their way up in obscurity, become reporters for the NY Times or Washington Post or NBC and actually change the problem of bias. Until they do... well, we'll just have awards like this.
