Now debating the right wing writers attack on him. Says rats are firing it all at Lott. Says conservatives are joining the rats against Lott! Quesion is if Bush and Lott stand together and in 2 weeks he is still standing what is the effect of this?

The Dems are pushing so hard for Lott to resign as majority leader I am almost ready to start change my mind about Trent (Spineless) Lott. Would I rather have don Nichols of OK as Majority leader? Yes. However, I do not wish to see the Democrats force Lott out.

As to his words and his apology, the initial statements were stupid he sould have apologised for them almost immedioately and explained he was thinking in terms of foreign policy initatives Ol' Strom would have put through but that is now water over the dam.

No, the Dems want him to resign from the Senate so they can gain a seat the only way they can, by appointment. But Daschle needs Lott to continue as leader -- no other Republican could be a bigger butt monkey for Daschle. Just like the Dems spent the summer demanding that Bush come to them and the UN for war votes, the Dems are asking for one thing and hoping for another.

Bush is showing his backbone. Trent now has to get some and show it.

The libs know that every time Trent gets backed into a corner he wimps out. Well, now is not the time to wimp out. What should force his resignation from his leadership role would be if he gets into some kind of sharing arrangement with the Democrats.

Trent needs to understand that being Senate Majority Leader is not a popularity contest. There's no way on earth he's ever going to get 60% approval rating by the public. Heck, Bill Clinton didn't even have a majority of the voters in his first election; he was elected President with only 43% of the popular vote. Trent needs to exhibit some backbone, and tell the next person that asks that it is a closed issue, that if the leftists want to make an issue out of it that they're welcome to do so, that if they want him to step down they're going to have to vote him out. That worked for Clinton in the impeachment issue, when more than 50% of the House of Representatives voted to impeach him, and he didn't step down.

Trent needs to recognize that as the Majority party, the Republicans now have some power, and they need to wield it.

Appeasement begets more appeasement and results in terrible compromises just to "get along". Trent will get along best by exhibiting some leadership, and moving the Senate's business foreward.

If the Democrats want to make an issue of it, it will only keep its legs if the Republicans continue to join in the criticism. This issue's legs need to be amputated!

I strongly believe that Lott is compromised - just as Newt was & see how Newt was neutered. I knew something was wrong then & I have heard the rumors about Lott (land deals especially). Strategery is entirely debatable - but IMO the first and highest goal is to dethrone the most damaging "Republican" we have on "our" roster. That's why I'm willing to let the Rats do what we can't seem to do of our own volition.

Actually, the Dems probably don't care whether Lott resigns the leadership or not. They still achieve their purpose, which is to throw mud at the Republicans. At least some of it will stick, regardless.

They have two immediate reasons for this particular charge of racism: 1) to keep blacks on the Democrat plantation, since they were starting to get restless in the last election; 2) to shoot down conservative judicial nominees under the pretence that they are racists, although the real reason is abortion. They understand that abortion is not popular with the voters, so they need some other excuse for obstruction, and this one suits them perfectly.
