UNM Professor To Retire Over Sept. 11 Comment Harassment Forcing Retirement, Man Says

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- A University of New Mexico professor criticized for a remark he made the day of the terrorist attacks on the East Coast said he plans to retire this year.

History professor Richard Berthold said Monday he would like to continue teaching, but constant harassment by people in authority at UNM is driving him into retirement.

Berthold said administrators are constantly finding fault with his performance and accusing him of misconduct.

UNM provost Brian Foster said it is not true that Berthold is being forced to retire.

Berthold received nationwide attention last year for his Sept. 11 remark to a class, in which he said, "Anybody who can bomb the Pentagon gets my vote."

He later apologized.

As a part-time UNM student it has been my experience that (and admittedly I avoided taking a class he taught) putting Berthold in charge of teaching impressionable minds out of high school is the same as putting JLo in charge of a marraige enrichment center or making Bobby Knight a member of Big Brothers of America.

I for one am glad he is retiring.
