URGENT - nephew suicidal and we have no clue what to do. VANITY
Posted on 11/18/2002 4:15:38 PM PST by Frapster
Hi everyone - we just got a call that my nephew is heavily addicted to various drugs and is on the verge of suicide. We are wanting to immediately drive over to where he works and talk with him. We know he purchased a gun and we want to get the keys to his apartment and take the gun from there.
We are looking for information on the Internet on the best steps to take in our situation. We feel the gun issue is pretty cut-and-dried but we're not sure he's willing to work with us.
We're looking for any info, a website that will help us get educated and FAST! Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.

He has to want help. Fortunately, most people with suicidal thoughts do reach out and want help. The drugs really complicate things. You are in a dicey situation. I'll pray for your success and hope others can give you better advice.

Contact the police in his area. They have the authority to hospitalize him against his will. Called a 5150 in Ca. If he is depressed there are some very go medications these days.

first thing is get the gun away from him, then take him to an emergency room, they'll be sure he doesn't harm himself. but the most important thing is to get him into rehab. ask your doctor for referrals. once he's weaned off the drugs he'll need lots of talking therapy. he obviously has some deeprooted problems which must be worked out. good luck.

I would try to have him committed. In my state it takes two family members. That is the safest thing to do.
In the meantime, you'll have to be cautious how you handle it and I don't have any specific advice because every case is different.

Don't call Harry Browne or Steve Kubby.
You might try calling the local county mental health office. Most of them have specialists on staff who know how to respond to emergencies such as this.

Work with him first, get to him .... if it is safe. The gun is not the first, second or third problem ... deal with him first, get some family or friends with him, find out what the actual situation. Are the drugs legal or illegal? Probably want to talk him into signing himself into a treatment center or hospital. Talk to his doctors. Get him to go to a quiet and safe place where he will be comforted and treated.
Don't pull any tricks on him -- that can bite you back. Unless he's completely wacko or unreachable, keep him in the loop, even convince him, cajole him to make the choices best for him ... that is probably a treatment center ASAP.

jokar is right. People who are a danger to themselves or others can be hospitalized for their own protection. In my state this can be done by the police or a physician. Person can then regain his freedom by court order or by the dropping of the hold on him by the agency or physician that initiated it. Your family doctor can tell you how this works in your state or the police would be another source for information.
Regards and God Speed.

NO, it is a most useful bit of advice. Prayer often calms a person which in turn allows better judgement of action.

It is not! Christ works through us in very different ways. Just look at all of the posts and advise our Freeper friend is getting from us. Christ works through those who listen.
