Regardless of the outcome of today's election, it's clear that our politics has entered a period of fundamental transition. The U.S., like most countries that derive law and politics from England, tends to conduct its politics with two major parties, one on each side of a great dividing issue. That issue has changed repeatedly over the course of the nation's existence, and all the signs indicate that it is changing once again.
