No Excuses for NOT Being There: Clinton and Davis, Monday Evening in LA!
Posted on 10/27/2002 6:44 PM PST by Mediaqueen

"On the Take" Davis and "On the Make" Clinton are appearing together in LA with no apparent shame in sight...
...so I'm posting a plea to make sure you're not "On the Couch!"
A sign idea is below, and I'd love to see more chant and sign ideas posted here.
I also wanted to comment on all the e-mails I've seen billing this as a "huge protest". Too often, when a claim like that is floated, too many people figure that they can leave it up to others to take a stand against corruption.
Well, big crowds don't happen unless you're there.
Yeah, that's right....you.
Change your plans, get a map... and head on over on Monday evening.
It's fun, it's cathartic...

The Democrats were lucky we were at this event, because otherwise the poor Firefighters would have fallen asleep from boredom.

Picture it: An evening of impossibly dull speeches, all alike. The speaker thanks the firefighters for inviting him, thanks the firefighters for all the hard work they are doing, takes about a minute tooting his own horn, and tells them to be sure to walk precincts and talk to people and get out there to vote!

By the time this pattern is repeated five or six times, even the dumbest Firefighter is going to have gotten the idea.

Well, we made their evening a whole lot less dull.

It started, though, with a mistake and a SWAT team...

GIANT SACRAMENTO "DUMP DAVIS" FREEP A BIG SUCCESS, with over 100 attending!

Over 100 freepers and friends gathered in Sacramento, showing steely-eyed determination to "Dump Davis".

People filtered into the rally gradually, to the point that one moment it seemed almost empty and then we had a huge crowd to contend with. And all of them - peaking at over 100 people towards the end - showed their determination to "Dump Davis" through their signs, slogans and passion.

RonDog's right! If you're thinking of going, please do it for me!!: I'm from DC and the plane fare would be prohibitive. I even permit you to pretend to me. What would I say to Pres. Clinton? Hmm, nothing. But to the women going into the buiding, I'd say, "You be careful now -- Bill Clinton is in there."

Davis, Simon wrestle for state's undecided voters

CONTRA COSTA TIMES

With eight days left until the Nov. 5 election, Gov. Gray Davis and challenger Bill Simon Jr. are focusing campaign efforts on Southern California as they attempt to win over undecided voters and inspire their respective party loyalists to cast ballots.

That should come as no surprise because the Los Angeles area contains the highest concentration of voters and media with the farthest reach. In the final days, that is where the campaigns can get the biggest bang for the buck, said Darry Sragow, a Democratic strategist who is not working for a gubernatorial candidate.

"You have to play in this market," Sragow said. "L.A. is important because it is huge in size, it reaches huge numbers of critical swing voters and because it's a relatively even playing field for both parties."

Unlike Los Angeles, California's other major cities tend to slant to one party or the other. The San Diego area, for example, leans Republican while the Bay Area is known for its liberal politics and large number of Democrats.

Both Simon, the GOP businessman, and Davis, the Democratic incumbent, will work hard to turn out voters because they are facing mass defections from their own party members and bracing for a record low voter participation, said Dan Schnur, a Republican strategist who is not involved in the race.

That means Simon and Davis are concerned with advertising to their own party members as much as to swing voters, which is uncommon in the closing days of a campaign, Schnur said. One objective for the two candidates is to get on radio and television in Los Angeles as much as possible, either through advertising or holding events that draw news coverage.

"The Los Angeles media market reaches almost half of the state voters," Schnur said. "It's very difficult to get on television in Los Angeles, but if you do, you reach an awful lot of people."

The Los Angeles area -- L.A., Orange, Riverside and Ventura counties -- has 6.3 million, or 41 percent, of the state's 15.2 million registered voters. In addition, L.A. television stations are carried on cable TV throughout Southern California.

Both Simon and Davis will hold events in the L.A. area today. Former President Bill Clinton will join Davis for a rally in Inglewood...

Court unseals documents naming Davis in fund-raising case
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | October 28, 2002 | Alexa H. Bluth
Posted on 10/28/2002 11:36 AM PST by mondonico

A federal judge ordered the release Monday of documents from a decade-old fraud and racketeering case in which a convicted felon implicated Gov. Gray Davis in a bribery scheme.

The release comes a week before voters go to the polls to choose between Davis and Republican Bill Simon, who's made attacks on the governor's fund-raising practices a centerpiece of his campaign.

Former Coastal Commissioner Mark Nathanson named Davis, then state controller, in two letters he submitted to prosecutors in 1993 as part of an unsuccessful attempt to cut a more favorable deal after pleading guilty to racketeering, tax fraud and soliciting bribes.

He was sentenced to four years and nine months in prison and fined $200,000. Prosecutors said Nathanson solicited money from celebrities and others in exchange for help getting projects approved by the powerful commission.

The Sacramento Bee has sought full release of the letters for two years. Until now they've been released only in censored form. The U.S. Supreme Court cleared the way for the release three weeks ago when the high court refused to hear an appeal...
