October 21, 2002 -- Tight-lipped authorities issued a cryptic public appeal to the Psycho Sniper last night - call us.

The plea from cops to the killer came after stymied probers found a mysterious note with a phone number in the woods where the sniper is believed to have fired a single shot at his latest victim in Ashland, Va., Saturday night.

Cindy wonders out loud, "Could "the beltway sniper" actually be operating with a terrorist cell or team versus just one sniper acting alone?"

DAILY STAR.com.lb - THE DAILY STAR Lebanese News: "WHAT HAS AMERICA ACCOMPLISHED?" -Opinion Commentary by Joseph Samaha (OPINION-COMMENTARY NOTE: Mr. Samaha is the editor of the Beirut daily As-Safir. He wrote this opinion-commentary for The Daily Star. OPINION-COMMENTARY SNIPPET: "But Washington will come under increasing pressure to wait and see what is really going on. The last few days have demonstrated that Sept. 11 was part of a larger scheme by a terrorist organization pursuing a specific goal. Many intermingling factors are at play that would become even more confused if the world were to engage in a new war. The issue cannot be looked at in isolation of what is taking place in Indonesia and Southeast Asia, as well as in Kuwait. It is not in anyone's interests to undermine the stability of the world's biggest Muslim nation (and the fourth largest nation in the world). As far as Kuwait is concerned, preliminary investigations revealed the existence of sleeper cells closely influenced by what is taking place in Palestine. Moreover, can terrorism be divorced from the internal situation in Yemen? The Americans don't have to look far to see what might happen if they insist on pursuing their vendetta against Iraq. In the very heart of their capital city, a lone sniper has been picking off people at random, sowing panic, and bringing ordinary life to a standstill. What is going to prevent small bands of terrorists from doing the same? The Washington sniper might not be a terrorist; but who says that terrorists cannot be snipers?") (101902)

I wonder how many people will have to die before the police, FBI and the media stop these press releases?

Some of the things being released do not need be published before this COWARD is caught!

oops...do not need to be

BTW... Kattracks, I am not upset at you for posting the story... I am upset with the Police, FBI, and the media for disclosing information that should not be known to the public while this coward is still out there killing people.

But the problem now is that the killer is doing the opposite of what most other serial murderers have done.

He is taking fewer risks, being more careful, and he has increased the intervals between shootings."

Not playing by the rules of the game Hey. They pesky Arabs do that don't they.
Still all they have to do is analyse the ink and find the ONLY MAGIC GOLDEN PEN with that ink! Then we got him....didn't we?

No wonder the Feds took a long time to work this one out.

Actually, Moose asked that this particular story be reported widely and often. They want the guy to hear that they want him to call, or whatever.

I still don't get it?

The killer left a phone number, and the police said "Call us at that number."

Huh?

What, did the killer leave "911" marked in the ground? It makes no sense.

I read this as he left a phone # for a particular location (say like 7-11 at Smith Street) and he indicated he will call that # and the cops should be there to answer the call.

Maybe this is an Islamonut. Like those who attacked the cemetery in Italy, dumb enough that he doesn't understand that in the USA phone switches can forward a call to just about any number.

I hope that Moose's police department is consulting with the Defense Department about this, not just winging it on its own. Terrorists are not a mere city police matter.

Geesh, I wouldn't want to be the one waiting in the phone booth. Sounds like a killer's trying to setup a cop as his next victim.

That may be exactly what the sniper is trying to do.

This guy is cold-heartedly dedicated to his mission. Just like the "Terminator", he can't be reasoned with, nor disuaded from his mission. These news leaks are meaningless in the current circumstances.

This guy has been well trained for his job as a cold-blooded killer. The cops are just deluding themselves if they think he wants to "communicate" with them.

This guy is on a mission to kill US civilians on US soil and as close to our nation's capital has possible. The question are: where did he come from? and who trained him?

The pattern seems to be that if the cops cooperate fully with whatever the shooters request, something really bad is averted.

This guy has LE completely over the barrel, and visibly paralyzed here. Which means he has some huge, huge aces up his sleeve.

They darn well better follow up on every thin lead. This sniper needs to be taken out.

[I wonder how many people will have to die before the police, FBI and the media stop these press releases?]

Think releasing actual info is far less dangerous than the inane and taunting speculation that passes as such ie the following as mentioned above. . .

*Saturday's shooting, for example, came after police noted the sniper had yet to strike on a weekend. . .*But the problem now is that the killer is doing the opposite of what most other serial murderers have done. . ."He is taking fewer risks, being more careful, and he has increased the intervals between shootings."

Have wondered why they offer a killer such challenges . . .

. . .and these are only a few examples of over analyzing this case for the sniper/terrorist while challenging him at the same time to change his MO. . .

. . .also think, the Police doing just what HE says to do; just increases his desire and pleasure for 'chain pulling'. . .

. . .and so far their way has not worked. They should try revealing everything; try pulling 'his chain' for a change. . .

One thing I'm wondering is, does the sniper have a lot in common with the anthrax killer?

Both kill randomly. Both hate DC in particular. Both are sneaky.

I'm thinking that perhaps the sniper is also the anthrax killer. Perhaps he used up all his anthrax and waited to see what the Al Qaeda would do on 9-11. Disappointed, he resorts to his gun, since he doesn't have the no-how to do other things. It's the same for infantry soldiers the world over. When they run out of grenades, etc, its time for the rifle.

How about issuing this challenge? Daring him to try to attack Gunville, Texas?

You can bet that the number has been transferred to a secure location, with tons recording and tracing equipment attached. If the murderer is stupid enough to make a call, which I don't think he is, LEO will get a voice print and a possible location based on the length of the call.

OTOH, wasn't one of arafat's guys taken out recently by a telephone handset in a phone booth?

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reported today that the message contained a significant amount of text and was found in woods behind the restaurant.

The newspaper, quoting law enforcement sources, also said cops have found more than one tarot card during the investigation

No, I don't think so.... the shooter could have quadrupled the victim tally if he wanted.

Since Moose gave his first conference (with the 'I've done some things I regret, and I've tried to learn from them..') it became clear that this really is between the killer and Moose.

Problem is, turns out there are just scads of different groups that hate Moose. Deciding which one the killer belongs to is what I'm grappling with.
