Sniper Sighting Fails to Create a Clear Picture
The New York Times ^ | 10/17/2002 | By FRANCIS X. CLINES

The police announced today that they had no sketch to offer the public in their hunt for the suburban sniper because witnesses who saw him kill his latest victim could not agree on details in the mayhem of the shooting scene.

Investigators confirmed that more than one witness saw the latest slaying, on Monday, but they would not disclose any details other than the fact that the sniper is male.

In another measure of the sniper's effects on local life, the opening of the muzzle-loading deer-hunting season was suspended by Maryland in a four-county region where the sniper has been preying.

"We don't want our officers chasing false alarms of shots fired," explained Doug Duncan, the Montgomery County executive.

Gov. Parris N. Glendening banned all recreational shooting except at approved firing ranges until the sniper is caught.

With thousands of calls to the police logged, the captain urged residents to keep calling about suspicious neighbors and "potential suspects," people suspiciously angry or absent from work routines or involved with weapons, she explained.

Federal agents say they have been receiving many tips from residents alarmed about gun-owning neighbors. "Most of these are possessed legally," said Michael Bouchard, chief agent of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, in the hunt.

"However, some are possessed by people who shouldn't have them," Mr. Bouchard added, cautioning against alarmist reports when the individuals are questioned.

All emphases mine.

As a proud gun owner (tough in NJ) I would hate to live next to some snoopy liberal do-gooder in Maryland right now.

Me thinks the clown would have been dead by now if this happened in Texas.

This punk "sniper" has been quiet for the last couple days. I was almost expecting to see a new shooting when I turned on the TV this morning. Think the witnesses of the last hit have scared him into taking a break?

Methinks we never would have elected an *sshole like "Paris" Glendenning to govern the great State of Texas!

I have long been concerned about freepers proudly discussing the types of guns they own.

A newbie pops on the board and wants to know what kind of guns we think he should buy......then freepers being the helpful sort go on to discuss the types of guns they own...........

In my humble opinion, this is folly!

I don't know about that. After all, we elected Ann Wrinkles. Of course, she only won because Clayton Williams ran the last two months of his campaign with a severe cranio-rectal inversion.

Yeah, the snoopy, liberal neighbors will be complaining right up to the point where the gun owner saves their bacon with a timely shot.

Imagine what will happen the day these terrorists learn that everyone in America, EXCEPT THEM, has been disarmed.

If the shooter is smart, he will take a break, forever.

Do we want him to kill again, so we can nail him? Or do we want him to stop and get away?

He could just disappear and never be caught. It's macabre the way the press is camping out waiting for the "next kill"..

Why do you think it's folly?

IMO, I'm sure if some guy in NV has an illegally converted AR or something he wouldn't just blab it. (And if he does it's his own stupid fault). All of my guns are legally purchased, registered, safely stored, trigger-locked, etc.

The government already knows what kind of guns I own. The only persons who would have malicious intent, other than the gov't, would be crooks. They'd have a lot harder time finding out who I am, where I live, etc.

Over the years I have come across various Vietman Vets that want to show me their M-16 that they brought back to the world with them. I have to explain to them to keep it to themselves or someone they shouldn't have told will turn them in. I also let them know that I am glad that they have their weapon.

One things for damn certain.....if Texans, saw a sniper leaving the scene of a shooting......there would be a caravan (on cell phones calling 911) in hot pursuit as he drove away.

Well, there you go!

And BTW, Paris Glendenning (would that be "Gay Paree?") makes Ann Richards look like Rush Limbaugh!

It's possible that LEO knows who the perps are and are building a case. There's a huge difference between knowing and proving, especially if you don't know exactly where the weapon is. There's also the possibility of a short list, but not enough evidence to break doors.

Then there's the possibility that they don't have a clue.

As for me, I don't actually own any firearms anymore - I turned them all in at the last "disarm yourself" rally.

"Then there's the possibility that they don't have a clue."

A possibility that always must be considered when dealing with local "law enforcement" ossifers.
