Feminist Doctor Surprises Audience With RU 486 Attack

Sydney, Australia -- Outspoken feminist Germaine Greer compared abortion to amputation as she attacked an abortion pill she had been asked to promote at a medical conference.

Dr. Greer was a keynote speaker at the Best For Women gynacologists and obstetricians conference in Sydney.

At the beginning of her address, she revealed she had been approached and asked to assist in "bringing pressure to bear" for increased access to the the dangerous abortion pill RU486.

She said it was an "odd situation" where access to abortion was regarded as some kind of privilege.

"Of course we need access to amputation but we need even more to make sure that as few people are in a situation where they need amputations as possible," she said. "Likewise abortion."

Dr Greer described RU486 as a powerful and unpleasant succession of experiences.

"These are violently active chemicals and they have violent reactions on the organism," she said. "What is the situation in which a woman would undergo that kind of assault?"

"....they have violent reactions on the organism"

While watching the actress Jessica Lang lay into Bush a few days ago I tried to figure out her motivation. What made her express such intense hatred? She was literally trembling with rage, her voice dripping with contempt, as she described how she "despised Bush."

To the best of my knowledge I cannot recall any Clinton hater --- and I proudly count myself one --- who has been caught on camera at a huge news conference giving incoherent, emotional vent to hatred for Clinton. But that's just what Lang did. Why?

Why does she find Bush's position at the helm of the nation so "humiliating?"

After thinking about it awhile, I surmised it has nothing to with Iraq, or even, as she claimed, Bush's squeaky close win in 2000. I think in order to find the real source of Lang's intense and emotional outburst one needs to know how many kids she has killed in her own womb. It's Bush's stand on abortion that galls and outrages Ms. Lang. I'd be willing to bet on it. Nothing else adequately explains the highly personal nature of her attack.

Pretty remarkable. Has Germaine Greer been going in this direction for a while? I haven't heard anything about her for a long time.

Pretty Much. She's been barking mad all her life.

She has issues. Not particularly nurturing upbringing, so all her life she has been saying the most outrageous thing for any particular audience just so people will notice her.

What Germaine Greer says in this story about RU-486 seems to be quite accurate, and ought to be more widely disseminated. She is not, however, a doctor of medicine or anything else remotely serious, and she has a long history of making bizarre attention-getting comments.

Germaine Greer has always shown herself to be better than the rest: smarter, more well spoken, and most of all, more honest. She's never shied away from speaking her mind even if it went counter to the 'going' feminist line. I admire her even though I don't agree with much of what she has to say. At least she's willing to debate honestly, and not just use name-calling as her weapon, a la liberal norm.

Has Germaine Greer been going in this direction for a while?

This isn't the first time. She came out about ten years in support of motherhood.

She said it was an "odd situation" where access to abortion was regarded as some kind of privilege.

Don't everybody get excited. She said it's odd that abortion should be regarded as a privilege. What she means is that abortion should be regarded as a right.

"Of course we need access to amputation but we need even more to make sure that as few people are in a situation where they need amputations as possible," she said. "Likewise abortion."

Yes, I'm sure that's what all pro-choice people say -- "abortion should be rare". However, since she is one of the biggest feminists on the face of the earth, I would wager that she is staunchly pro-choice.

"Of course we need acccess to amputation... Likewise abortion."

Meaning that abortion should also be "accessible".

"[Of course we need access to abortion."]
