MOSCOW (AFX) - Ayman al-Zawahiri, considered Osama bin Laden's top aide, has been killed in Afghanistan, Russia's ITAR-TASS news agency reported, citing informed sources.
In a report from Islamabad, the agency cited sources who said al-Zawahiri was not killed in fighting but in a special operation carried out by unidentified individuals.
It did not give the date of his death.
Zawahiri, an Egyptian physician and a leader of the Egyptian Islamic Jihad, was said to be the number two in bin Laden's al-Qaeda network and its chief financier.
He is said to be bin Laden's mentor and one of the chief organisers of the Sept 11 terror attacks on New York and Washington.
The US has offered a 5 mln usd reward for information leading to his capture.

Let's see. That's #2 dead, #3 dead, #4 captured. And #1 not heard from since Dec.
Not bad considering we're "losing" the war.
God bless our troops!

Didn't Bush say that a lot of the war on El Qaeda would be carried out outside of the public eye? Hmmmmm.....

al-Zawahiri was not killed in fighting but in a special operation carried out by unidentified individuals Nah, it was a suicide, just like Abu Nidal. [grins]
Way to go Special Ops. Track 'em, whack 'em and stack 'em. In an unidentified manner of course.

Ayman al-Zawahiri is now a "good" terrorist.

If this kill was carried out by, say, five members of our Special Forces, I wouldn't have a problem giving them a million each. Good work!

The one thing that the US pounding of Afghanistan in 3 months showed the Russians, is that the US Armed Forces would've been a much more powerful foe for them than anyone could've imagined.
And the one thing the Russians have always respected is strength.

How many times has al Zawahiri been killed now? Must be closing in on bin Laden for most death reports.
Killed by unidentified indificuals at an unspecified date? Maybe he's dead, maybe he isn't.

I hope we got un approval as not to upset the international community
