I need some help please. A 'Trojan Horse' has been detected on my computer!
Posted on 09/09/2002 9:08:04 AM PDT by Sweet_Sunflower29
Does anyone know what I need to do to clear this up?
I know nothing about a Trojan Horse--what it is, what it does or how to get rid of it.
I figured (hoped/prayed) there might be fellow FReepers available to help me with this...
:)
Many Thanks~

This has got to be a big step up from finding a rattlesnake in your bedroom, though, right?
(Sorry to keep mentioning that, but I thought that was one of the best threads of the whole summer :D)

Get him off immediately. You're computer is in danger of crushing.
Sorry, couldn't resist. I have no clue what to do.

What is giving you the message that it's been detected, and does it say which one?
To: Sweet_Sunflower29
a trojan horse allows someone to connect to your pc without you being aware of it... they can log your keystrokes, delete your data, even upload a virus and execute it on your system

not an expert but if you have Windows operating system, do a search or find, ask for files that have an ".exe" extension, so search request is
*.exe
then look for something that has a new date and/or suspicious name, and delete it.
While it's still in your recycle bin, check your system to make sure everything works. If it does, empty the recycle bin to get rid of the file.
Don't try this yet until someone else confirms that this is the right approach.

How do you know you have a Trojan Horse?
To: Sweet_Sunflower29
Go to this site:
Symantec Security Response
Use their search engine to find the name of the virus you think has infected your system, then download and run the patch.
What virus-blocking software are you using?
It is important, not only to run a virus scanner on your system, but to make sure that it is updated with the latest definitions. The definition lists are updated at least once a week.

Better a Trojan Horse than a horse Trojan.

#1) How (or with what) did you detect this, and
#2) does the program not give you the option to "clean" the trojan off once it's detected (most do)...
imhop, anyone running a Windows box and not using the following 3 things is asking for a booted down door in the middle of the night: A) Anti-Virus Software B) A firewall (Zonealarm is free and very good)
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp and C) Adaware spyware finder/remover

most trojans have a stay-alive feature, and write themselves to your registry, so deleting a suspicious exe file will not get rid of it
as soon as you reboot your computer, the trojan will recreate itself again
you have to clean it with an antivirus tool or patch

what trojan do you have? I would recommend not turning off your system until you clean it.

Ok...My anti-virus scan caught and notified me about this trojan. However, unlike a Klez Worm, the anti-virus is not able to fix this trojan, and in the virus log my computer is listed as 'still infected'.

You are so funny!

if your antivirus software detected it, then it should have given you a name, right? Search symantec.com for that virus name and they should have removal instructions (yeah, the instructions are usually "for dummies" versions)
