Newsweek Editor: 'I'm Tired of 9-11 Commemorations'

Newsweek magazine's managing editor Evan Thomas said Monday he was already tired of the media's coverage of the 9-11 anniversary, even though the actual event is still two days away.

"I'm tired of it," Thomas told radio host Don Imus. "And I don't want to see all those buildings collapsing over and over again," the jaded journalist added.

Apparently realizing he made an embarrassing and insensitive gaffe, Thomas quickly amended his comments.

"On the other hand, one of the great things about America is that we get back to normal and that's good. But we ought to be reminded on a regular basis, once a year is pretty good, of how bad that was back then because it was pretty bad."

Thomas added that he thought the commemorations were "particularly appropriate, now that we're getting ready to go to war, (so) that people remember the consequences of all of this."

On the other hand, isn't the constant SuperBowl halftime-like, over the top, studio produced, who can out 9-11 who, a real example of what is wrong with America? It is all show, emboldens the enemy and gives them 24/7 confirmation of the scale of damage they can inflict on us with our own assets?

Something can be said for solemnity. Solemnity doesn't sell much though.

Get used to it. The Texans have the Alamo, the Jews have Masada, the Serbs have the Field of Kosovo. American have Sept 11 (short hand for the WTC, the Pentagon and Flight 93, the last of which is strictly analogous to the others listed).

A glorious defeat becomes a permanent feature of a people's consciousness in a way that a glorious victory doesen't. Americans will be saying "Let's Roll" as long as the Republic (or Empire) lasts.

Don't forget the Law Of Unintended Consequences. American anger may have faded somewhat the last few months, and now - with the constant media anti-war drumbeat, all the 9-11 hype MAY have the effect of once again stirring the hornet's nest. The media has forgotten that you must be careful what you wish form

If we the public need Barbara Walters, Dan Rather, and Paula Zahn to kindle some form of outrage over an attack on the citizens of this nation, we are in deeper trouble than most realize. Vigilance, patriotism, and passionate support of defense is the obligation of every american on a DAILY BASIS, not just when it can get ratings or ratchet sheeple up into a temporary but short lived awareness.
