I am of Irish, German, Russian descent. I remember my grandmother speaking German to my father once, and I was amazed. I had never heard her do that before, she only spoke in English.
My father explained that she never used her native tongue, except on rare occasions, because she said "I am an American, now, we are American now, do you understand me?"
