Sept. 11 Suspect May Be Relative of '93 Plot Leader [Yousef]
New York Times ^ | June 4 ,2002 | JAMES RISEN

WASHINGTON, June 4 — United States intelligence officials said today that they had concluded that a possible relative of Ramzi Ahmed Yousef, who coordinated the bombing of the World Trade Center in 1993 and a later unsuccessful plot to bomb American airliners over the Pacific, played a pivotal role in planning the Sept. 11 attacks on New York and Washington.

The man described as a possible relative, Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, 37, a Kuwaiti, is now believed to have been a leading figure in Osama bin Laden's Qaeda network who helped plan the attacks, officials said.

The assessment that Mr. Mohammed played a significant role in the attacks provides a new and direct link between the hijackings last year and the failed airline plot by Mr. Yousef's group in 1995. The estimate also suggests a connection between the first attack on the World Trade Center and its destruction.

Mr. Mohammed has been indicted in the United States on charges that he was involved in the January 1995 plot, led by Mr. Yousef, to bomb American planes flying between Southeast Asia and the United States. The F.B.I. has placed him on its list of most wanted terrorists. Officials said he was believed to be in Afghanistan or living nearby.

Since Sept. 11, many American experts have pointed out the parallels between the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon and the "Manila plot," Mr. Yousef's plan to bomb up to 12 planes. An alternative plot considered by Mr. Yousef's group was to hijack the planes, instead of bombing them, and crash them into prominent American buildings, including the headquarters of the Central Intelligence Agency in Langley, Va.

The plot was foiled after Philippine authorities arrested accomplices and found Mr. Yousef's laptop computer, which had information about his plans. Mr. Yousef escaped. He was tracked down and arrested in Pakistan and returned to the United States, where he was tried and convicted in the Manila plot and the first attack on the trade center.

For many years, the C.I.A. and Federal Bureau of Investigation were not certain that there was a direct connection between Mr. Yousef and Al Qaeda. They had a shared radical Islamic ideology and used similar terrorist tactics.

But the trade center bombing in 1993 occurred before American investigators began to see signs that Al Qaeda was emerging as a major threat. The Manila conspiracy was also not believed to be an operation of Al Qaeda.

United States intelligence officials said today that Mr. Mohammed seemed to have had a significant operational role in planning the attacks on Sept. 11, perhaps just below Mr. bin Laden and his three top lieutenants. But officials did not provide details about his involvement in planning Sept. 11 or how they had determined his role.

The new evidence of Mr. Mohammed's role in the attacks is certain to prompt a reassessment of the connections between Mr. Yousef and Mr. bin Laden.

The evidence could also help explain why Al Qaeda decided to attack the trade center again, to try to finish the job that Mr. Yousef started nearly nine years earlier.

In recent months, American counterintelligence officials have identified a small group of other Al Qaeda lieutenants as the crucial figures behind the Sept. 11 attacks. They include Mohammed Atef, the military chief of Al Qaeda, who died in November in an American bombing raid in Afghanistan; Abu Zubaydah, 30, a Palestinian held by the United States; and Ayman al-Zawahiri, an Egyptian radical and Mr. bin Laden's top deputy.

It is also unclear how close a relative Mr. Mohammed is of Mr. Yousef, who is in the federal penitentiary in Florence, Colo.

In 1995, American authorities first accused Mr. Mohammed of working with Mr. Yousef in the 1993 bombing. In 1998, Mr. Mohammed was indicted by a federal grand jury in Manhattan in connection with the Manila plot.

Mr. Mohammed has been described by authorities as often wearing a beard and glasses, as well as being slightly overweight.

The authorities have also accused him of taking part in a test run of the Pacific bombing plot on a flight from the Philippines to Tokyo. An explosion on that flight killed a Japanese executive.

They apparently did that in the Philippines and an attack was averted.

But because of political correctness and the idea that there are to be no restrictions on an individual's actions whatsoever (under the guise of protection of civil liberties), they were not rounded up in the USA and their attack worked.

Note that in the original plan they hijacked planes outside of the USA, but the intelligence services of the Philippins prevented the attack. So...they went to the one country they could be assured would not profile them--ours. And the rest is history.

Very well put. When will we wake up?

Probably after a future attack. But then only after there is serious retribution against Muslims in the USA. That, of course, is preventable--as are future attacks--if we get serious about searching for terrorists already among us--which includes racial profiling.

"Probably after a future attack. But then only after there is serious retribution against Muslims in the USA"

If there is a major attack dwarfing 9/11 or multiple attacks countrywide, I think a vigilante reaction will begin. Then the powers that be might be on the horns of a dilemma. Do they go after Americans attempting to defend themselves (however wrong) or start targeting the terrorists in a serious way as they should have from day one. Maybe then, Americans will recognize the idiots who constantly yell "Profiling" for what they are. Fools, idiots, dupes, socialists and basically aligned with the enemy.

The connection between the original World Trade Center bombing, the "Manila plot" (Project Bojinka--"loud bang" in "Serbo-Croatian"), and Sept. 11th centers in one country--BOSNIA!!!!

It is time to end muslim Bosnia as we know it!!!!

It's finally going mainstream. The NYTs is slow, but this is a significant step forward.

Ramzi Ahmed Yousef was a well know jihadist for the Bosnian Muslims and came up with a plan to use airplanes as weapons of mass destruction he named Project Bojinka "loud bang" in the Serbo-Croatian langauge of the Bosnian Muslims. Project Bojinka - US Knew Of Bin Laden Philippine-Based Airliner Crash Plots in 1995

How much Clinton's alliance with the Bosnian and Kosovo Islamic jihad undermined our security is a topic up for great debate. IMHO, I think it was our Achilles heel and may explain a lot. Accuracy In Media was the first to call this Clinton's BIN LADEN GATE

Bosnia was the main logistic hub for the 9/11 Atta Cell.

Abu Zubaydah, captured in Pakistan in March, is said to have told U.S. interrogators that the hijacked plane that crashed in Pennsylvania was destined for the White House, suggesting he knew of the planning.

"We are confirming the presence of [bin Laden’s] al-Qaeda network in Bosnia," said a spokesman for NATO-led peacekeepers. The arrests, he added, had "disrupted" the network. "[But] it has not been destroyed. Investigations are continuing." Direct links to bin Laden, in fact, focus on just one man, the apparent leader of the Algerian cell. Bensayah Belkacem, 41, alias Mejd, worked at a humanitarian agency in the central town of Zenica until his arrest earlier this month. Combing through his dingy rooms, police found two sets of identity papers (Algerian and Yemeni), blank passports, and — in his mobile phone — the number of a senior bin Laden aide, Abu Zubaydah. Like Belkacem, Zubaydah is a veteran of the Bosnian war. Investigators say he is now in charge of screening recruits for al-Qaeda training camps in Afghanistan. According to telephone transcripts, the men discussed the procurement of foreign passports. There was more: Belkacem made 70 calls to Afghanistan between the day of the U.S. attacks and his arrest.

Khalid Mohammed worked for Samir Khalil in OKC. Khalil employed OKC bombing suspects Abraham Ahmad and the Iraqi Al Hussian Hussaini, This is according to Sharon Twilley, Samir Khalil's former secretary who identified Khalid Mophammed to authorities in OKC again in 2001 after the 9/11 attacks.

Twilley received theartening phone calls after the 9/11 attacks and sought protection. I was asked to contact someone in 2001 to help get Twilley the protection she needed.

In October 2001 a plot for another attack in OKC was described to be in the works by ME terrorists believed to have been associated with Iraqis , Hamas and possible AlQaeda terrorists connected with 9/11
