SANTA MARIA, Calif. (AP) - An angry cattle owner complained Monday there was no reason for California Highway Patrol officers to gun down six heifer cows that escaped their grazing site and loitered for hours near coastal Highway 1.
The cows were killed Sunday night while grazing in an open field about 50 to 100 yards from the highway, the Santa Maria Times reported.

Well, look at the bright side- he'll have freezers full of steak.

Well, these guys sure showed superior problem-solving skills, didn't they? They might wander out onto the highway, so we'd better shoot 'em.

Three hours is now the limit for finding the owner's of found property. After that the CHP will open fire, problem solved.
I'm worried about the children.

Four cows lay dead in a lettuce field
off West Division Street Monday. Six cows were shot by
California Highway Patrol officers when they strayed near Highway 1.

Jim Carey's "cow" scene from the movie Me, Myself and Irene comes to mind...
Thank God the ATF wasn't called out, we'd still be picking up cow parts.

PETA is gonna be pi$$ed...

Grey Out Davis will most likely promote the trigger man to Captain and place him incharge of the CHP anti-roit squad.

He said the animals contained his brand, which should have helped officers locate him. The CHP dispatch center in San Luis Obispo keeps a copy of a brand book listing local ranchers' names and addresses, but it wasn't immediately clear if officers checked it. With investigative skills like this, I'd say promotion to detective is out.

he'll have freezers full of steak. He won't even get that. The carcass has to be processed immediately. I'd be p!$$ed. Don't they have units to pick up stray cattle and hold them? We darn sure do here.

AND, they intentionally shot the cows. Most cow deaths by gun shot are by
hunters, er, wannabe hunters, that can't tell a deer from anything else.
So what's the farmer complaining about? Education works.
Either that, or it was vegan protected grass.
Was asked by a park ranger once to stay off the Artic tundra.
Never mind that we were still in North America.

"
They finally had to shoot them for safety reasons, he said, adding livestock that have wandered onto highways have caused fatal traffic accidents in the past."Using that reasoning, they would shoot people for the same reason.
The CHP has never been encumbered with the thought process.

Oh Gee .. one would think they could have called someone to round up these cows till the owner was found
But I guess that would make to much sense huh??

Don't suppose they ever heard of rope and a stake in the ground? Kind of like the guy with just a hammer in his toolbox... everything looks like a nail.

As a deputy in a rural county my husband frequently encountered loose livestock near a highway or road. He never had to shoot one that wasn't already gravely injured. He had a rope in his trunk and usually just tied it to a nearby fence until he could contact the owner or another nearby farmer or rancher that would keep it until they found out where it belonged. How hard is that? What complete pansies these CHIP officers must be if they are too afraid of grazing cows to tie them up.

Now thats something. Where will PeTA stand on this one?
Dead beef crushing vegetables. What a situation.

I wonder how many rounds of ammunition were expended in this operation. What a bunch of maroons!
