PA's systematic incitement against the US

December 23, 2001

INTRODUCTION

Within hours after the horrific terrorist attacks in the United States, there were spontaneous outbreaks of rejoicing in the streets of the Palestinian Authority. According to Israel Radio, at least two news organizations decided not to broadcast footage of these celebrations after senior officials in the Palestinian Authority - including prominent PA ministers - threatened their lives. Arafat's denunciation of the attacks, which continues to be broadcast, is in direct contradiction to the atmosphere of hatred he has been promoting through his tightly controlled media. The following are but a few examples:

'The suicide bombers of today are the noble successors of their noble predecessors... the Lebanese suicide bombers, who taught the US Marines a tough lesson in [Lebanon]...and then, with no preconditions, they threw the last of the remaining enemy [Israeli] soldiers out of the [security] zone. These suicide bombers are the salt of the earth, the engines of history...They are the most honorable [people] among us...'

[Al Hayat Al Jadida - Official Palestinian Authority daily, Sept. 11, 2001]

Hafez Barghoutti, Editor-in-Chief of the official PA daily: "The writers, Charles Krauthammer, William Safire and Michael Malley, try to portray us as if we are threatening New York and as if fighting us is an American need and that a good Palestinian is like a good Indian - dead. This is the culture of the Zionist Lobby that rules even over the bedrooms of the senior Members of Congress and the White House. It whips them in the morning and evening lest they awaken from their servitude. It castrates them and supplies them with 'Monica Viagra.' "And the last to judge us in this area is the pathetic scoundrel Thomas Friedman who called upon NATO to conquer the [West] Bank and Gaza in order to protect his beloved Israel. "These examples of beastly writings which surpass Nazism, require that their authors be tried in an international court, for they are considered inciters who have committed crimes against humanity...."

[Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, August 29, 2001]

Saher Habash, a member of the central committee of [Yasser Arafat's PLO faction] the Fatah... said that the body goes but the spirit of the martyrs lives on. Habash expressed his hope that the Arab and Islamic world will act against America and Israel....Habash demanded to strike and to threaten the American interests in the Arab world..."

[Meeting with journalists in El Birah, Al-Quds, Aug. 30, 2001]

"[Maher Taher] a member of the political bureau of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine ... said, 'We say to the Arab nation: Hit American interests and threaten them. The United States is a fundamental enemy' He asked the Arab countries to take a clear and strict position towards the US, which is the a fundamental enemy of the Palestinian people and the Arab Nation."

[Al Hayat Al Jadida Aug. 28, 2001]

"We must harm American interests in the Arab world, with all possible means, in all places, at all levels, because the United States does not understand the language of logic and wisdom, but only the language of interests and force."

[Omar Helm Ghul, Al-Ayyam, Aug. 30, 2001]

PA: WTC Earthquake" Shakes American Arrogance

Up until the day after the massive terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, the Palestinian media was voicing increasingly virulent anti-American sentiment. In the immediate aftermath of the attacks, there was a sudden reduction in direct anti-US rhetoric, and more subtle references to America s having to rethink its superpower status.

The following excerpt from an editorial 'Give Peace a Chance' (written by the editor of the Palestinian Authority owned daily) and the caricature below illustrate the ongoing anti-Americanism expressed in the Palestinian Authority.

Note the use of the word earthquake here, implying that the attacks were a natural disaster.

"Three weeks after the earthquake, the Americans had to revise [their thinking] on many issues, perhaps the most important of which is its foreign policy that regarded others from an exaggerated sense of superiority [one which] caused it not to see things clearly. The earthquake forced the Americans to get down out of their ivory tower and take a realistic look at what is happening on the planet. They view themselves as its master, but actually they have discovered that there has been a huge build-up of hatred against them"

(Al Hayat Al Jadida, Oct. 3, 2001)

The following caricature portrays President Bush as a Muslim terrorist.

Text: "Hey, Bushie, don't you look different since you decided to fight."

73% of Palestinian’s supported suicide attacks against USA in Nov. 2000 poll

Introduction:

As PMW has been reporting in recent days, the spontaneous Palestinian celebrations after the horrific attacks in the United States were genuine expressions of the deep hatred of America, that has been promoted by Palestinian Authority leadership for years. The following public opinion poll from last November is another measurable indicator of this hostility:

The Poll results:
'73% of Palestinians support military action against American targets in the region'. Regarding suicide missions against American interests in the Middle East 73% supported, and 22% opposed, and it is interesting that the support for attacks against American targets among academics reached 77% compared to 70% among illiterates.

[Al Hayat Al Jadida, on Nov. 11 2000.]

The Public opinion Poll was conducted by the Program for Educational Development of Beir Zet University, in Ramallah in the Palestinian Authority, and published in the official Palestinian Authority owned daily.

"Western Civilization will become a pile of rubble" in Palestinian education

by Itamar Marcus and Ruthie Blum

September 17, 2001

Introduction:

The Arab world has been attempting to depict America as a victim of their support for Israel and are claiming that the Arabs have no inherent anti -American bias. However, there is nothing farther from the truth. The Palestinian Authority has been teaching their people for years, that the PA sees the Palestinian conflict with Israel and the United States as two branches in the general total global war of Islam against the West and all other religions. An 11th grade PA textbook describes the inevitable victory of Islam over the West with words that become ever so chilling following the World Trade Center horror: '... We do not claim that the collapse of Western civilization, and the transfer of the center of civilization to us [Islam] will happen in the next decade. Nevertheless [Western civilization] has begun to collapse and to become a pile of rubble.' ['Some Outstanding Examples of Our Civilization' for Eleventh Grade]

In Palestinian Authority schoolbooks, Western society and values, especially those the United States, are portrayed as corrupt, that will inevitably lead to their demise. At times this Western demise is seen as a natural process arising from the innate Western corruption. In other texts the children are taught that the Jihad Muslim fighters will be victorious over the West through Jihad (Holy War for Allah).

The following are citations from two Palestinian school textbooks that reflect attitudes prevalent in Palestinian society:

[The books are published by the Palestinian Authority Ministry of Education based on previously published Jordanian books, and in use in the school year 2000-2001. Translations by Center for Monitoring the Impact of Peace.]

The school texts:
'In the present period, which exceeds all previous periods in terms of the material and scientific advances taking place, social, psychological and medical scientists in the West are perplexed by the worrying increase in the number of people suffering from nervous disorders...and the statistics from America in this matter are a clear indication of this'

'Western civilization, in both its branches - the capitalist and the Communist - deprived man of his peace of mind, stability and noble human examples whom he can respect, when it turned material well-being into the exemplary goal his money leading him nowhere, except to suicide...'

'Western civilization is the representation of the highest form of material life achieved by man, but this alone does not bring him happiness, as you have seen. There is no escape from a new civilization. The Western world is not capable of fulfilling this role. There is only one nation capable of discharging this task and that is our nation [Islam]...'

'... We do not claim that the collapse of Western civilization, and the transfer of the center of civilization to us [Islam] will happen in the next decade or two or even in fifty years, for the rise and fall of civilizations follow natural processes. And even when the foundations of a fortress become cracked, it still appears to be at the peak of its strength. Nevertheless [Western civilization] has begun to collapse and to become a pile of rubble.'

'Since the beginning of our reawakening ... We awoke to a painful reality and oppressive imperialism and we drove it out of some of our lands and we are about to drive it from the rest...'

[Some Outstanding Examples of Our Civilization for Eleventh Grade]

Islam, The True Religion: The Victory of Islam:
'This religion [Islam] will defeat all other religions and it will be disseminated, by Allah's will, through the Muslim Jihad fighters.'

Palestinians Continue to Ridicule America’s War on Terror

Following the US offer of a $25 million reward for the capture of Osama Bin Laden, this cartoon of an imbecilic Uncle Sam hosting the game show 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire?' appeared in a Palestinian newspaper today:

The text: 'The 25 million dollar question: Where is Osama Bin Laden?'

The options:

1. Still in Afghanistan;
2. in the Philippines;
3. in Chechenya;
4. in Indonesia. [Al Quds, Nov. 22, 2001]

Palestinian Anti-Americanism Continues

The Palestinians persist in their accusations that the United States is indiscriminate in its enmity toward the Arab world. The following cartoon appears today in a the official Palestinian Authority daily:

Caption: 'Bush: The war in Afghanistan is only the beginning'

In the bull's-eye: 'Afghanistan'

Dart board, counterclockwise from 1:00 - 'Iraq', 'Syria', 'Lebanon', 'Somalia', 'Libya', 'Sudan'.

Arab Man: 'The Other Arabs'

The missile-dart in his back: 'by accident'

Pan-Islamic Anti-Americanism in Palestinian ideology

by Itamar Marcus and Ruthie Blum

December 13, 2001

Introduction:

Though presenting themselves in the American media as supportive of the US war effort, the Palestinians continue to ridicule and condemn the United States - in their own Arabic-language publications and broadcasts. One of the themes regularly expressed in the Palestinian-Authority-controlled media is that the US-Taliban war is part of a global conflict in which the Judeo-Christian West is fighting against the entire Muslim nation. Another involves the ongoing hatred of the US as an integral part of Palestinian ideology.

These themes were prominent in a sermon delivered last Friday in the Al-Aqsa Mosque and broadcast on Palestinian Radio, in which America is referred to as 'infidel', 'Crusaders', and 'head of world terror'. The deliverer of the sermon identifies ideologically with all the Muslim wars throughout history, while criticizing the limited national outlook of individual Muslim countries today. He portrays all of the current Muslim conflicts in Chechenya, Kashmir, the Philippines, Iraq, Israel and Afghanistan as part of a global conflict against Islam.

It is important to note that, while the US continues to stress that it is not at war with Islam, according to Palestinian ideology, Islam is in a worldwide conflict with the West.

The following excerpts from this important sermon shed light on the global Islamic worldview of the Palestinians and possibly of many other Muslim nations:

'O Muslims, he who says that the month of Ramadan is abundant with Muslim victories and greatness is right'

'How our [Islamic] nation is in need today [our nation who] became divided into schisms and factions and into small countries, whose concerns do not cross their own regional borders, and who have limited outlooks how [our Islamic nation] is in need of learning about Mohammed's life and of reaping benefit from its lessons'

'Have today's leaders been struck deaf and blind, such that they do not hear the cries for help of the bereaved women and widows, or the wails of the children and orphans, nor see the humiliation that has befallen the nations of Islam at the hands of the invaders and occupiers?'

'[It was] during blessed Ramadan that the Muslims were victorious over the Mongolians 'The [battle] cry'. To help Islam!' continues to echo in the Muslim world [today]. Is anyone responding? Here [today] the 'Mongolians' and 'Crusaders' are raising their heads and enlisting armies to fight the Islamic nations in an oppressive campaign, under the label of 'terrorism' which the infidels are attaching to the Arabs and Muslims, for the purpose of realizing their imperialist interests, and to spread their control over the Muslim countries and their resources.

If terrorism - as viewed by America, the leader of world terror - is the killing of innocent civilians, we have to ask: Does the killing of innocent children, the elderly and women, and the death as martyrs of the sick [denied passage to hospitals] at military check points in Palestine constitute terrorism? Is the killing of Afghani civilians and their expulsion as refugees in their country and in neighboring countries considered terrorism? Does the continued siege on Iraq, continued aggression against it in the North and South, and the death of children due to the shortage of food and medicine enter the category of terrorism?

Cannot these war crimes, and the rest of the conditions to which Muslims are subjected in Chechenya, Kashmir and the Philippines, be categorized as terrorism, according to the American perception of terrorism?

'There is no place for a weak nation [America] among the nations of this world, one which was blinded by the intoxication of power and understands nothing but the language of interests and hegemony. You, Muslims, have interests in the world and power within you, which will seat you in the place you deserve among nations, which will restore your role as the pioneers of good peace in this destroyed world, if you follow the path of the Koran and the path of the prophet [Mohammed]'

[Palestinian Radio, from the Al Aqsa Mosque, by Mohammed Hassin, Dec. 7, 2001]
