How To Win As A Conservative In Left-Leaning States
Vanity | 05/15/2002 | MAKnight

I have a friend, who is as Conservative (and as racially mixed) as you could probably get - think of a cross between Tom DeLay and Tiger Woods, with ten times the charm - who is thinking of running for office on the GOP ticket and going state-wide within a few years ... either the Governor's office or for the United States Senate. He had wanted to run a lot sooner but had chosen to wait (after some wifely intervention) until his last child's age was in the double digits.

In early 2003 his daughter turns ten. The problem is; he's a born and bred Marylander, living in Annapolis and he wants to run for office in his state. So, the question is; is it do-able? Can a true-blue all-round Conservative win in a Left-leaning state like Maryland? Judging from what happened to Bret Schundler last year in New Jersey, the conventional wisdom would suggest a strong "No". But ... I believe that Bret Schundler could have won that race in November.

"How?" is the $1,000,000 question my friend asked me. With the added benefit of hindsight from 2000 & 2001 observing the Bush, Santorum and Schundler campaigns I gave him the following suggestions. Criticisms, contributions and all other forms of opinion welcome ...

Hoping this is not too stupid … and that it may help in some way. Good luck.

What a great combination of optimism and practicality your ideas show! This high-minded candidate wins by being a successful spokesman for conservatism. He opens some minds and wins some hearts, even if he (or she) doesn't win the election. The candidate would not be a mere politician, but a statesman.

Sounds good to me. However, in light of CFR, what is the practicability of the advice given in the next-to-last paragraph:

Add to all that the new innovation apparently being taken nationwide by the DNC; having a group of so-called Republicans declaring themselves "moderate" and endorsing the Democrat. This is not something the average voter ignores. Imagine what an ad by a group called "Teachers for Academic Excellence" refuting the Teachers' Unions' lies and endorsing Bret Schundler could have done for the Schundler campaign. Ads by "Women for Schundler" could have chipped off some of the female support for McGreevey. An ad by the "United Citizens of New Jersey" (a clearly multiracial group), touting Bret's record in Jersey City could have chipped off a little more minority support and probably soon would have had the media in a panic. How about ads by a group called "Democrats for Schundler"? Or even better (and more ironic), "Moderates For Schundler"?.

I know CFR does not kick in till after the next election, so maybe it is "do or die" this election cycle.

The big problem is that very few people with conservative/libertarian political leanings want to win political office badly enough to do everything on this list. Politics is not a religion for us - just something we occasionally feel called to do out of a spirit of public service. For the Left, political campaigning is a permanent jihad against the wicked Right Wing infidels.

Excellent strategery for conservative candidates running in Rat dominated states. I fear however, its a waste of time for the Stupid Old Party is in a defensive crouch most of the time and is usually not as articulate as you my friend and me and fellow Freepers here in making the case FOR conservatism. And add to that GOP candidates hiding their pro life and pro gun views under wraps, like Bill Simon is doing and you've got a guaranteed recipe for an electoral debacle. Indeed, why doesn't Simon bring forward pro life and pro gun people from a wide walk of life as possible to counteract the image there's something extreme about his views is beyond me. He doesn't have to say ANYTHING --- just show the media and the public perfectly NORMAL people hold these views and they can't all be misogynists or raving trigger happy homicidal maniacs. We really need to stop acting like there's something wrong with our views and what we need is to be loved and approved by liberals. Its human nature to want to be liked by one's adversaries, but conservatives should resist the temptation to go along to get along. Its time to FIGHT BACK. That's how we'll win in a Rat dominated state.

You don't mention whether or not your friend has been active in the local Republican committee or not. If he's serious about running for office, I'd suggest that he join the committee, start learning about how the Party machine works, what the different factions are (internal politics can be worse than partisan politics), who in the Party he can trust, and who are the RINO's who will attempt to block him - all the while pretending to be his friend.

I've been a GOP activist for six years - and I'm still learning.

How can you possibly win votes when its obvious you want to sweep your beliefs under the carpet, out of sight as if they were some dirty secret to be ashamed of? Stand up for them, defend them as loudly and as effectively as possible ... don't run from them.

Exactly. If the "conservative" candidate even weakly backs something like "gun control" at all, that suggests that even he thinks it's a good idea but wants to be an obstructionist. In the eyes of the public, if something like "gun control" is a good thing at all, whoever is more strongly for it is the better candidate. To be seen to be less in favor of a good thing than another candidate is to lose on the issue, almost guaranteed.

Republicans need, instead, to hold firm to the issue and take a stand that "gun control" is not a good thing for anyone but the government and the elite. Expose the lies and hypocrasy of people who want to forbid "ordinary people" from having guns while they themselves have guns themselves or armed bodyguards. Ask why state XXX which is proposing loosening CCW laws should expect the results to be any worse than any of the other states that have tried it. Put the liberal on defense.

If Republicans would do that--if they'd actually stand up for conservative viewpoints, they could win. Unfortunately, that's probably the last thing the Republican leadership wants.

The way I look at it, a candidate has to be educated on the rule of law, have common sense, and has to show it when any of these accusations arise.

The best way to destroy any credibility of the left is to indicate what the law says, what history says, what made America strong, and where the Left's policies will ultimately result.

For far too long I have seen too many Conservatives not stating the obvious common sensical reasons behind their views. They shy away from them. You have to be ablet to counter the slanderous assaults on your character, your beliefs, etc. In essence, throw the left's garbage back into their face. If they make an unfair accusation about you, turn the tables and give the reasons why. Point out the reasons why their views of the world are completely flawed, and how they have never had any success, but further burden the American people and are gradually bringing us into a totaltarian state. Bring up taxes, etc. I believe that it will work.

Hire Rick Shaftan (of Mountaintop Media), an excellent right-wing political consultant who does political campaigns for conservatives all over the country. FReepmail me for his details.

I always believed the best way for conservatives to run is to Hi-jack liberal terminology and label liberals at the same time. I.E. Anti-tax's, Pro-equal rights, while claiming liberals are anti-equal rights, playing the race card does work, but only if make the minority group feel that the liberal group is condesending to them. I.E. minorities are not mentally retarded and should not be treated as learning disabled. Even on abortion, choice is choice, and choosing life is a choice while the liberal is pro-abortion and thus anti-choice.

Go the whole nine yards on the issues, i.e. be an unapologetic and proud Conservative, whether it be on school choice, abortion, gun control, tort reform, compulsory unionism, bilingual education, property rights, welfare, taxation, etc. The media would scream foul and waste no time in "advising" you to lurch as far to the Left as possible i.e. become more "moderate".

You can be the most conciliatory/ "moderate" of Republicans, but should you be running against a Leftist Democrat, the unions are still going to call you a threat to worker's rights, the NAACP and La Raza would still call you a racist, NOW and NARAL would still call you a threat to women, Sarah Brady and her cohorts are still going to call you a threat to children, the NEA and AFT would still call you a threat to public education and the Sierra Club would still call you a threat to the environment. And everything they say about you would be faithfully repeated by their ideological allies in the Press and news media.

This is about as true an analysis as there could ever be..............one thing people forget is that you can never reconcile an ideology with these types.

You might hear the big buzzword "United We Stand" emanating from the Hollywood and newsmedia types, but you know what it means, eventually?........You'll have to be united under their "pro-this-that-the-other" Hammer and Sickle leftwing propaganda............liberals are the type that will root for the Palestinians, Arafat, the Taliban, and at the same time will try to stoke this "We Love America" image. All the while plotting its downfall.

I can't agree more with your suggestion of adopting a more aggressive approach in this regard........why should we always defend against left wing attacks, especially in light of the fact that the things they are proponents of are usually the most vile, and easily proven as such, things most people would ever consider?

They are totalitarians, and since when should we ever attempt to excuse ourselves to a bunch of Orwellian Newsspeaking, Politically Correct Modern Day Fascists.

Political Correctness has been a disaster from its inception, which was a very long time ago. These crypto-communists deserved nothing more than a firm boot towards the door a long time in coming.

I'll be blunt about it.........follow the liberal agenda, and sooner or later we'll all be 'enjoying' the type of justice seen in the Third World..........look at the things the United Nations supports, the body that the 'enlightened' liberals in this country thinks the Constitution should be a footnote to, and it is easily demonstrable as to what a prescription for disaster it is..........most countries in the world right now are brutal, clannish rights-stomping entities, and we have these vacant eyed liberal types insisting that this is "The Way".

If it's not "The Way", at least we can fall back on the notion that we didn't offend some backwards cultures's totalitarian notions of society.

During the primaries, Ronald Reagan stood up and told America his views on everything. And he promised to derail Communism and cut taxes.Reagan looked at America as if to say "America, you know where I stand; I dealt the cards, you play em. America played the cards and everybody won.

These are excellent suggestions. I think we need to keep in mind, though, that ANY candidate has to have some personal charisma and appeal, and preferably, be a good communicator. Those characteristics are harder to find in people than you think.
