Do You Pay EXTRA for Fox News Channel?
None | April 12, 2002 | who knows what evil?

Posted on 04/12/2002 3:40:06 PM PDT by who knows what evil?

I am really getting fed up with Comcast Cable. The people of east Tennessee have been fighting with Comcast for a couple of years to get them to add Fox News Channel to their line-up. Last year, we were "promised" that FNC would be added to the cable system in February 2001. Then we were told that "negotiations had fallen through", and that there would be NO Fox News Channel for the foreseeable future. On several subsequent occasions, staffers at our local Com(mie)cast office told me "not to hold my breath" while waiting for FNC to be added to our local line-up. Now, after several years, Fox News Channel is being added to our local cable system; effective April 19th. The problem? If you want access to FNC, you will have to pay an ADDITIONAL $9.95 per month for their "value package upgrade" because that was the "only place they could make room for FNC in their line-up". My BS detector went off. My understanding is that Comcast locations in other areas around the Southeast, including Nashville, receive FNC as part of their basic package. (In other words, on the same plateau as MSNBC, CNN, CNBC, and so forth.) I asked the office manager why we had to pay for an upgrade, when other Comcast customers didn't have to. The buck was passed on to an out-of-town Com(mie)cast contact. My question is: how is FNC handled on other cable systems around the country? Are other Freepers paying premium prices for FNC? I just don't feel one should have to pay a premium price for one news network when you don't have to for others. Feedback?

No Yankees baseball either - without DirectTV.

But why not DirectTV? You'll never regret switching to it!

Get as many like minded people together as possible and get them prepared to drop their cable and order the Dish. If you get enough people, you can probably work out some sort of discount from the dish people. I'd also call your local newspaper for them to cover the meeting. Give CommieCast an ultimatum, Fox or else. Be prepared to do the or else.

Here is Stephanie as she was awarded First Runner Up, she is on the left. Isn't she just gorgeous, and so nice! That is one of the FEW times we watched another channel other than Fox News!

In San Diego I receive Fox News Channel from Cox Communications. It is included with about 34 other stations for $33.00/month

Hell no. Get direct tv or dish. Screw the cable punks.

First; thank you to everybody for your feedback! I may just go with a dish just as a 'thank you' to Com(mie)cast for treating their customers like crap over the past few years. I was hoping to catch Comcast as one of the few cable systems in the country charging extra for FNC, but it looks like it is an arbitrary, "like it or lump it" decision made by individual franchises. Oh, well...if they don't want my money, I can certainly take it elsewhere.

I live in SC and we have Time- Warner(Turner)and started getting FNC in Nov. It comes with the regular package. It is the best thing that happened as far as my TV in years. I knew the other "news" stations were bad but I never had any idea how bad. I called them and thanked them and so did other members of my family.

I get FNC from my cable provider (Mediacom) with the basic service. I'm also using them for my Internet service, since @home went belly up.

In my son's town, Wheaton, IL, they carried on a very strenuous campaign to get AT&T Broadband to include FNC, even to the point of putting up signs all over town. They got it as of 4/1.

You've got to organize and you've got to threaten. When you drop a cable provider to go to the Dish, because you want FNC, you've got to make sure that they know why.

By the way, many of my friends use Comcast - because they have no other choice. Comcast's Internet service sucks. Limited download speeds and ever increasing costs. I believe that if I was a captive of Comcast, I'd probably go to the Dish.

While you're at it be sure and tell the local advertisers why you're dropping cable. They would appreciate knowing that they are wasting their money advertising with them and no one is watching. That will also help wake them up(a little late).

We have Charter com. here in STL, Also have it at Lake of the Ozarks (which is a resort, vacation area about 150mi. from STL for those non-missouri types)

Charter in STL has FNC as part of basic programming

Charter at the LOZ does not, it was formerly Falcon Cable and run on a shoestring, I bet the reason they still don't offer it as basic is because they are ass@ol#s or maybe its cause of the extra expense it would take for the moron sitting at the keyboard to type a few keys and make it so!

Here in the Capital District of NY, I have watched the cost of basic cable service grow from $19.95 per month, 9 years ago to nearly $50. No converter box! This is basic service. They are promoting digital cable for an additional $9.95/month.

Yes, we have FNC, CNN, CNBC, MSNBC, C-SPAN, C-SPAN2 and the "rerun" channels - TVLand and Nick at Night. What once was free, now costs a pretty penny. Personally, I find the cost outrageous. As I recall, when cable was first introduced, the big plug was NO ADVERTISING. Now it's advertising 24/7. Infomercials round the clock + the shopping channels. Whatever happened to commercial free TV? Even PBS now has advertising.

"...if they don't want my money, I can certainly take it elsewhere."

My folks are in Mississippi and that is exactly what they are telling their Comcast cable station! They, and their friends, have been trying for years to have it included on their cable and Comcast still refuses. They are going with DirectTV.
Good luck to you!

You have to understand something about these cable companies (the local folks you deal with directly): They're franchises; effectively, like the local owner of a McDonalds or Burger King. Their offerings vary area to area, town to town. For example, Time Warner Cable had FNC in neighboring Durham for years before TWC in Raleigh (where we live) finally added it. Each franchisee has the right to choose their programming based upon local demographics, etc., etc.

To answer your question directly, no, we don't pay extra for FNC..............but we've also switched to satellite (Dish Network). Even before, though, when TWC added FNC to their lineup (we had their digital cable offering), there was no extra charge to receive FNC. I suggest that you look into satellite. There are outfits that will now "lease" the dish, receivers, etc. so that you don't have to come out of pocket to buy them........and the monthly cost is still less than digital cable.

No but I probably would if I had to- to me it's worth it. Otherwise, I'd be watching a lot of Lifetime, A&E, History Channel and CNN.

Unfortunately, it's Time-Warner (Ted Turner CNN) and they refuse to put Fox on.

That's funny- Time-Warner includes FOX in my town. I'd talk to them if I were you.
