Catholic clergy in Africa exacerbates sexual exploitation of women/nuns including rape and abortion.
National Catholic Reporter ^ | March 16, 2001 | By JOHN L. ALLEN JR. and PAMELA SCHAEFFER

"Several reports written by senior members of women’s religious orders and by an American priest assert that sexual abuse of nuns by priests, including rape, is a serious problem, especially in Africa and other parts of the developing world.

The reports allege that some Catholic clergy exploit their financial and spiritual authority to gain sexual favors from religious women, many of whom, in developing countries, are culturally conditioned to be subservient to men. The reports obtained by NCR -- some recent, some in circulation at least seven years -- say priests at times demand sex in exchange for favors, such as permission or certification to work in a given diocese. The reports, five in all, indicate that in Africa particularly, a continent ravaged by HIV and AIDS, young nuns are sometimes seen as safe targets of sexual activity. In a few extreme instances, according to the documentation, priests have impregnated nuns and then encouraged them to have abortions."

Is exacerbating what makes you go blind?

Hey, I was sued for "exacerbation of intestinal distress". I had a fender bender in a Hechinger's parking lot. They were suing me just for the heck of it -- they were really going after Hechinger's -- I'm sure they got a nice settlement.

Lawyers suck.

I would strongly suggest that all Catholics, who value their faith,DO NOT READ I repeat DO NOT READ the Catholic Reporter! It is a far left paper, who is no more Catholic than Jerry Falwell(no disrespect intended)! It is liberal in it's theology and in its' politics. It is not a traditional Catholic paper.

Come on now. How can you blame the Catholic Church for anything that happens in Africa?

The church has done many wonders in Africa. Last week I read somewhere that we me have an African Pope soon.

I "blame" any Church (not just Catholic) or church leader which is hypocritical. In this case I blame the Catholic church culture which lauds male heirarchy above all else to the point of abuse of its followers, including children and sexual exploitation of women.

So are you saying you don't believe the report, or you just don't care how the clergy conducts itself in Africa?

The structure of the Chruch hierarchy is not the issue here, much as you would like to make it so. As long as men and women are subject to sin, evil acts will occur. Nothing in Catholic teaching condones such acts. Indeed, Catholic teaching condemns all types of illicit sexual activities (rape, abortion, homosexuality, bestiality, pedophilia, etc.). That they occur at the hands of the shepherds of the Church is a testament to how successful your 'anything goes' movement has been in infilatrating positions of authority.

Your use of tragedies to advance your political agenda is shameless and disgusting. I'll pray for your conversion salvation.

The structure of the Chruch hierarchy is not the issue here.... ___ I believe it is. But not just church heirarchy. Any elitist heirarchy system is a framework for abuse. As long as men and women are subject to sin, evil acts will occur. Nothing in Catholic teaching condones such acts. ____ I never made the claim that Catholic teaching does, therefore I don't need to defend a claim I didn't make. Indeed, Catholic teaching condemns all types of illicit sexual activities (rape, abortion, homosexuality, bestiality, pedophilia, etc.). That they occur at the hands of the shepherds of the Church is a testament to how successful your 'anything goes' movement has been in infilatrating positions of authority.____ I know wht the Catholic church condemns and doesn't. Now, what are their actions. How do they handle these wayward "shepherds" ? That is the question. And what exactly is MY movement? Do you know me? What authority do you have to speak for me and claim I'm "infiltrating authority"? What authority are we speaking of?

I retain the right and obligation to speak against authority figures who are corrupt. You cannot take that right or obligation from me or from anyone else. Anyone who fails to name evil, is complicit in evil. Haven't we learned from history that being silent may as well be committing the acts themselves?

"Your use of tragedies to advance your political agenda is shameless and disgusting. I'll pray for your conversion salvation."____ What is my "political agenda"? Would you fill me in?

I read a report which disturbs me and I posted it. What is my agenda? What is anyone's agenda here who posts an article or report here?

The same Pamela Schaeffer of Catholics for Free Choice? Oh, sure, then this article must be 100% accurate.
