For a little background . Here in Washington State we have a nuclear reactor that is completely built and it is the only reactor in the United States capable of making many types of medical isotopes for the treatment of cancer.

Just days before the end of Clinton's administration his Secretary of DOE, Bill Richardson, ordered the reactor shut down. Unfortunatley Bush's Secretary of DOE, Spencer Abraham, has upheld that order. Our two senators, Patty Murray (D),and Maria Cantwell (D) are upholding the shutdown also

The people in our community believe Spencer Abraham did not give it a fair review, and we are going to continue the fight until the day they remove the core from the reactor. This could happen in the near future so time is of the essence.

FREEPERS THIS REACTOR, THE FAST FLUX TEST FACILITY, (FFTF) IS ALREADY BUILT. WE HAVE ALREADY PAID FOR IT. IT IS THE ONLY ONE IN THE UNITED STATES CAPABLE OF MAKING THE NEEDED ISOTOPES. DON'T LET PEOPLE SUFFER ANYMORE FROM CHEMO AND RADIATION BURNS WHEN THEY CAN TARGET JUST THE CANCER CELLS.
THE ANSWER TO CANCER IS SAVING THE FFTF FOR MAKING MEDICAL ISOTOPES. SO PLEASE SIGN THE PETITION.

FWIW, my late first wife had Kaposi's Hemoragic Sarcoma.... followed by malignant melanoma. Fortunately (???) another disease killed her. All of us should sign this petition.

This really is important, folks- in the 23 years since Helen was first diagnosed, treatment has gotten somewhat better, but malignancies still kill an awful lot of people-- and once your life has been so touched, you really never will be again the person you once were.

BUMP--for one of the answers to cancer. An example of using targeted isotopes is the use of iodine isotopes to treat thyroid cancer. The patient is put on an iodine-free diet for a few weeks and then given radioactive iodine. Since the thyroid avidly absorbs iodine, cancerous thyroid cells left after surgery take it up and are killed.
