It looks great! Personally, if it was upside down and backward I would still be here.
Thanks for all your hard work.

I'm with you on that! I'm grateful that the WebTV folks had problems with space that caused the sidebar to be removed. (I don't mean I'm glad that they had problems, but their problem resulted in ------ Welllll -- you know what I mean! LOL!

I suspect they may be compiling a list of the most annoying FReepers by now too! Hehehe....I'm thinking probably a good percentage of us on ALL sides would qualify.

I would have to admit I might be in that category! But its all part of debate. And this site has plenty of avenues for debate.I love it,and Im even getting to like the new look.Good work Jim & John!

Regarding the right side bar:

(1) Can you order the topics the way they were in the old forum (or the order we subscribed to them) such that the topics don't jump all over the place when someone puts up a new post in one of those categories?

(2) Can you lower the number of posts under each topic or give us an option to select a number. Five posts were too few, 25 are too high (though more is better than less).

Thanks for listening to our non-stop bitching for the past 36 hours!! Way to go guys!!

It is hard to express what each and everyone of us owes to you and the efforts you have made.

Just to add to the mix, this latest iteration is working out very well.

Thanks for all that you do.

Jim - What does the little 'upside down V' mean that you see at the end of a title? For instance, this title:

"I'm running a Dell laptop and it's just peachy with Netscape 4.79!!"

Thanks. I'll try with netscape. Of course, it could be this 1998 Toshiba laptop with some kind of loose connection where the a/c adaptor plugs in....so I have a tiny piece of wood from the end of an incense stick stuck in it to stop it from jiggling loose and shutting off. Sheesh. !

You're from California, of course, so that's why you would use an incense stick. The rest of us would use a match stick. LOL

I've been playing with my Personal Menu and My Preferences pages. There's no direct link back to the Posts page -- only an indirect one to www.freerepublic.com. Or, of course, I can use the Back button.

Message from JIM ROBINSON about the "Easter revisons" to FR's BETA launch:
"So this whole effort was to find the perfect FONT??? And perfect headline color? I am still annoyed and liked FR much better a month ago before all the changes..." - alisasny

"Acually, the exercise had nothing to do with finding the perfect font. We are in the process of expanding the forum software. We are going to be adding several new forums and new features over the coming weeks.
We added the left side menu bar so we would have a place to list the new forums as well as the new navigational tools that will be needed for the new features we are adding. We did not want to eat too far into the right hand sidebars so we added the new area. And we introduced the blue colored background (and flag image) to act as a separater to separate the new side bar from the text area. We also added a box around the center text area for the same reason.
Many people said the flag background made the page harder to read so we removed it. No big deal and no loss. They also said the font was too small, so we increased it. The blue background and the box around the center text was thought to make the page look too busy, so we went to an all white background, removed the box and left more white space as the separater.

This actully would have worked very well for what we were trying to accomplish, however, we found that it would not work out for our WebTV users. Seems their browser is not very wide and our new left side menu was pushing their right sidebars off the page.

Ok, so we punt and go to plan B. We remove the left side menu and move most of the navigation tools back to the top of the page. We've now gone from two lines of navigational tools to three lines, and we've moved the list of forums back to the right sidebar. So, we will now try to find places to squeeze in the new links for our additional new features as we add them, without making any additional drastic layout changes. I think the current layout is functional and not all that cluttered or "artsy fartsy" as at least one complainant claimed.
Hopefully, it will work out well for most people.

Sorry about the fire drill. Just keeping everyone alert. Hah!
Thanks, Jim"

Hooray for Plan B! Free Republic RULES!!! (Particularly now that you can READ it again.)

Better, right.

Now also all the artwork will not give away the nature of the threads to the unsuspecting inadvertant viewers at work.

Must confess, I think I like cleaner better. But in principle, I also like MORE OPTIONS the better.

Great job, John!

SUPER CHEERS for all the effort and the 'above and beyond the call of duty' sensitivity to feedback.

I'm pretty easy to please by you guys. You're just pretty tops in my book.

My bias is for more user options than less. If I had to choose, probably the cleaner look is nicer, to me. But put in the options wherever you wish however you wish. I'll adapt. I just appreciate all you do for us and the Nation.
