Looked for the source article then noticed this is a 20 year old thread.
So, in really round numbers Vesuvius buries its surroundings about every 1900 years?
It’s about due...
:^) Nearly 21 years old — “This topic was posted 12/6/2001”.
Question though:
Was this village buried BEFORE Rome expanded into that area?
A pre-Roman village in Italy would be pretty cool to study. Get a baseline for what changed with Roman conquest.
Way before Rome. Way before Mycenaean and Minoan Greece actually too.
Italy before the Romans is a fascinating topic...there were other related tribes like the Samnites and the Umbrians, but then there were the Etruscans who were very different and had a civilization well before Rome even got going.
My dad was born there and lived just up the side of a mountain from pre-Roman Samnite ruins. Very different construction...they didn’t have concrete, so they used huge polygonal walls.
