Borrowing Trouble [California Electricity Mess]
Barron's ^ | October 29, 2001 | Thomas G. Donlan

Edited on 04/22/2004 11:45:38 PM PDT by Jim Robinson. [history]

For more than a year, California has suffered through blackouts, brownouts and an economic form of mass hysteria. Watching the governor of California, Gray Davis, exhibit the symptoms of economic idiocy became a reliable amusement for the rest of the country. As he said so accurately when the problem materialized, Davis could have solved it in 20 minutes had he been willing to let electric rates rise.

California's looming bankruptcy was predicted six months ago by Investor's Business Daily. That's why I now subscribe to IBD instead of Barron's.
"The fiscal recklessness shown by California’s politicians may be unsurpassed by any state in American history."

That's funny! Look what I posted just last night to another thread on the same subject and compare it to the next-to-the-last paragraph of Barron's article, above.

"Ya know, the initiative process is what gives us "follower," poll-driven politicians who are too timid to be leaders in this State!

If any Governor, Mayor or other elected official were ever to choose a course, steer consistently along it and start accomplishing something... some other idiot like Harvey Rose-n-fell would pay other negativistic idiots to gather signatures to put something on the ballot to stop such a leader and his/her course of action!!!

It really is a case of "The nail that sticks up, gets hammered down!"(old oriental proverb)

Thus, you see that Pat Brown and Ronald Reagan were the last two Governors to ever accomplish anything meaningful in this State, since Jerry Brown blew the property tax problem just as bad as Gray Davis has blown the energy crisis, by being reluctant to do anything and show leadership.

I read in today's paper that the March Primary Ballot is almost naked of propositions. Rosenfeld wanted to put a "Prop.13" style measure on to freeze the load on ratepayers and it scared Davis to death!!!"

I know, how vain can one become? Quoting one's self... The shame of it all!!

First, Zinnnnnnng, is an understatement. I loved the article. Thanks.

The quote of the year has to be "Watching the governor of California, Gray Davis, exhibit the symptoms of economic idiocy became a reliable amusement for the rest of the country."

I do like the financial advice that only Californian driven by their sky high taxes should be the only ones crazy enough to buy power bonds. When such bonds default, it would make the politics of default a lot more interesting!

FreeRepublic is doomed.

Several interesting and important articles like this one slip silently down the stack into the archives, while "Why White Men Prefer Asian Women" gets over 1000 comments.

I guess everyone has finally lost it...

This article speaks the truth. I am so glad to no longer be living in California.

"... guess everyone has finally lost it..."

Yep! There's no accounting for tastes, even in "interesting times!"

With some of the fantasy of some "doomsayers" coming to reality, I think the offense of the Clinton, Clinton & Gore Administration that gave life to FR has "de-sensitized" even conservatives to rational priorities.

Plus... they changed this system so you can't "troll" for replies by putting subtle messages in the "To:" spot, anymore!

LOL. I missed that article entirely--probably for the best.

I think that one reason this topic is not followed as closely as some others is that it's become fairly convoluted over the past years. Although the basic themes are easy to grasp by everyone, the twists and turns in the situation are difficult to follow, even for me, who's kept up with the story all along.

And a fact that can not be disputed, is that "sex" sells, even to Freepers.

but I like Asian wimmin.... :)

Randita hit it. This is too convoluted for most people. The consequences will be spread out over decades and that might not even be enough to slow this state down while it's building on the backs of immigrunt labour.

Nope, I think that the only real consequence will be to imprison the State into that characteristically Democrat-fascist nightmare of bond buying plutocrats, the middle class on a downwardly spiraling treadmill, and a horde of government-dependent peons.

Davis could have solved it in 20 minutes had he been willing to let electric rates rise.

Sorry To burst your bubble, but had Davis "let electric rates rise" he would have been breaking the law as written into the phony REPUBLICAN "deregulation" law.

Quote from AB1890:

" (b) It is the intent of the Legislature to provide the legislative foundation for transforming the regulatory framework of California's electric industry in ways that meet the objectives stated in subdivision (a). It is the further intent of the Legislature that during a limited transition period ending March 31, 2002, to provide for all of the following:

(1) Accelerated, equitable, nonbypassable recovery of transition costs associated with uneconomic utility investments and contractual obligations.

(2) An immediate rate reduction of no less than 10 percent for residential and small commercial ratepayers".....

As to the lack of power plants, California had a Republican Governor for 16 consecutive years prior to Davis....

Republican deregulation, Republican price controls are why the utilities are bankrupt...get it?

Of course I understand in narrow minds, any critisizm of Republicans and their ineptness, incompetence or outright fraud makes me a Davis lover or a democrat disruptor but nothing could be further from the truth nor will it change the facts.

I'll let you guess . . . to whom this is a reply:

A patient came in presenting chest pains and a runny nose.

The patient died suddenly.

The doctor put the cause of death: runny nose.

Let's not be too hard on the rest of Free Republic, after all we need to keep the FBI, NSA and others monitoring the website amused. Remember that according to the liberal left press, some in the FBI are blaming the Anthrax attacks on Ultra Right Wing Groups and the FBI is monitoring a right wing West Coast Organization in hopes of finding out who is responsible.

Well we do at least have the Topic List to help keep the pile sorted out.

I just think the volume has become a problem.

If you use the Search engine and enter to:Calpowercrisis you will see very little because John has had to cut down on the size of the tables.

""sex" sells, even to Freepers."

Only if Lewislynn can blame it on the Repellicans, by golly!!! Never misses an opportunity to penetrate Pubbies to the hilt with repeated thrusts at every opportunity in uncontrollable heated excitement, complete with hard breathing... even gasping!!!

There... there's some pseudo sexy stuff on this thread now, do ya think it'll help keep it outa the archives a little longer?

That's akin to terrorist attacks on Bush's watch.

Using your narrow minded nitwitery Bush is at fault for the terrorist attacks.

Does it matter who's "watch" it was on or does it matter what allowed it to happen?...
