McCarthy says he ‘couldn’t live’ with himself if he did deal with Democrats to save Speakership

Former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) reflected on the end of his Speakership on Thursday while taking a dig at Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), saying he “couldn’t live” with himself if he cut a deal with Democrats to keep his job.

McCarthy was ousted from the Speakership in October after eight Republicans, led by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), backed a motion to vacate, alongside all Democrats. McCarthy said he refused to work with Democrats to save his job at the time, claiming their price was too high.

McCarthy was ousted from the Speakership in October after eight Republicans, led by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), backed a motion to vacate, alongside all Democrats. McCarthy said he refused to work with Democrats to save his job at the time, claiming their price was too high.

“I couldn’t live with myself if I’d done a deal with Democrats,” he said in an appearance on Político’s “Power Play” podcast. “If you can’t sustain being speaker by your own majority, should you sustain it? No.”

Democrats backed Johnson in a late-night vote to shut down a motion to vacate brought by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) on Wednesday, citing his actions to advance a foreign spending bill that irritated some conservatives.

“You just gave a logical, concise, and well-reasoned argument for selling out your base and giving up your principles.”

This is the “conservative” playbook. In every country, for the last 60+ years.

The Dems come from a collectivist mindset, were as the Right come from a
Individualist mindset. For a Repub leader it’s like trying to herd cats.
Which is why we need Especially strong leadership, and leaders like Boehner crying on his tie, Hastert chasing little boys, or P Rino wondering where he left the keys to the Wiener Mobile, aren’t going to cut it.
People who go along to get along are way to weak to be in these positions, unfortunately, that is a trait that is to often found on the Right, they’re just not constituted to be confrontational and fight, they’re wimps.

Hey McCarthy.. remember when you sent Obama a bill to repeal obamacare 50 times (which he refused to sign), but would not send the exact same bill to Trump (who said he would sign it)

Wasn't the senate the problem?

Three Republican senators — John McCain, Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski — and all Democrats voted against the bill

It’s a game. They all talk to each other. Obama won’t sign, they knew. So, they send it to him 50 times to sign knowing full-well that he won’t sign. The left-wing Republicans don’t have to do a thing.

Trump says, “I’ll sign it”. Suddenly, 3 senators step in to make sure that it can’t be on Trump’s desk.

We’ll see how history will be remembered, but I’m thinking more and more than ousting McCarthy will not be remembered fondly. But that is in part due to the availability of hindsight. Now we know that someone even worse than McCarthy was waiting in the wings to betray his electorate. I’ll never trust Johnson again.

And sadly a significant portion of the Republican voter base will believe him.

You big dummy, you let Pelosi and Hoyer keep their Speaker and House majority offices for 10 months after you made Speaker. It wasn’t until your buddy Patrick McHenry was made temporary Speaker that he kicked them out, and he only did it because he was ticked that the RATS had failed to save your sorry ass.

"I was speaking of McCarthy. He wasn’t perfect but was ok. Johnson is worse."

One of McCarthy's problems, and issue that GOP members had with him, was that McCarthy wasn't complying with his own agreement to allow single issue Bills to be voted on. He continually lumped them all together. I'm not happy with Johnson's performance, but at least has separated Bills...example...there were three separate Bills on aid to Israel, Ukraine, and Taiwan.

It would have been the exact same outcome if McCarthy was still Speaker. He might have bloviated a bit more and made it sound like he was standing up to Democrats, but he would have "caved" (quotes because McCarthy and his RINO pals are happy to pass the Democrat agenda - no caving necessary). There is no meaningful difference between these parties at a time where there absolutely should be a big difference, to the detriment of Americans.
