Andreessen Horowitz investor says half of Google's white-collar staff probably do 'no real work'

An investor at famed Silicon Valley firm Andreessen Horowitz is the latest VC to get involved in the debate around "fake work" in the tech industry.

In an interview published Monday with Emily Sundberg for her Substack newsletter "Feed Me," Andreessen Horowitz general partner David Ulevitch called Google "an amazing example" of a corporation employing people in "BS jobs."

"As we (society / our economy) prioritize conglomerates and megacorps, irrelevant jobs proliferate," he said. "Anyone who works in a 10,000+ person or larger white-collar job company knows that a bunch of the people can probably be let go tomorrow and the company wouldn't really feel the difference, maybe it'd even improve with less people inserting themselves into things."

“The growing professional managerial class in America, and more importantly, the societal perception that those jobs are 'really important,' is a weakness, not a strength," he added. "I should note, I have been a part of this class in my career, and it's great — people really treated me like I was very impressive and important when I was an SVP at Cisco, and so naturally I thought I was, too. This dynamic is endemic across corporations and is lame."

How about we start with all Indian-born management, then their complicit HR, and all H1B. The country will benefit as they all return to India.

I worked in a VA Hospital for 23 years. The employees that really do the work are mostly very good but I would think 20% of them should be fired as they are worthless and firing from a government job is very difficult. Management at the top is far in excess of what is needed. Get rid of half of them. The doctors and nurses and pharmacist etc. that are involved with direct patient care do an outstanding job under difficult conditions. Sometimes we failed due to management and not our skills.

To fix the VA is simple. Fund each hospital based on patient volume and allow management to hire and fire as needed without restrictions. If they are not successful, remove management and replace.

No matter how bad he thinks it is in corporate America, it’s a thousand times worse in government. And it’s not just because there are useless
people in make-work jobs, either. It’s because government is doing things way beyond its remit. There is no natural enemy to government so it grows and grows and grows…like the rabbit population in Australia.

Ha. But the boss got to replace Mark Harmon on NCIS.
Must have kept up with the proper TPS Reports complete with the new cover sheets as in the memo. My advice is not to go riding in a powerboat.

The “work” of socializing the company’s “village of governance” - what they want the culture to be. Same problem at Apple, etc. of Big DEI.

Yep. We’ve seen enough of their arrogant leftist manipulations, frankly. Twitter was literally infested with them. They were supposed to come here, learn and then take that education BACK to their home countries to benefit there. Not destroy ours. IMO, they, India are a bigger threat to us than the Chinese.

The Silicone Valley was one of the pioneers in self indulgent, politically correct “Fake Work” .

The Tech Industry spawned fabulously successful international companies that brought unimaginable wealth and power to the Valley from all over the entire world and concentrated it in the hands of a self indulgent elite.

The Silicone Valley universities like Stanford and Berkeley pioneered the politically correct, woke identity politics studies world and the start up companies hired and grew up with these pioneering DEI grads.
Many of these grads have built fake work empires within these companies.

Twitter is the perfect example of the modern fake work corporate culture - half of the employees were working fake jobs that amounted to little more then extensions of their far left campus activism. ,

Amen! I’d allow companies just as many H1Bs as they want. Its just that each one will cost $50K. The license for one can be renewed annually and the fee paid annually.

That right there - making them more expensive to employ than an American - would result in probably a 97-98% reduction in H1bs.

Companies would bring back the job training programs they used to have REAL fast.

Yeah, but Captain Sobel revoked his weekend pass for not using the new cover sheet for the TPS reports.

“So Google is run like the government.”

Judging by the involvement Google has had over the years, Google IS the government. Didn’t Biden, FBI, CIA, etc., embed government employees / spies at Google, Twitter, et al., to monitor and censor content?

I have seen this thinking play out many times over many many many years. Build flatter and faster. It always ends with more VP’s and they get rid of the bottom layers that actually do the work.
