Government mandates that your car 'monitor' your behavior: Biden signed the bill in 2021
American Thinker ^ | 05/05/2024 | Eric Utter

New technologies that will make monitoring drivers' behavior easy and comprehensive … will soon also be mandatory.

H.R. 3684, an “infrastructure” bill signed by Joe Biden in 2021 included a provision mandating expanded monitoring of folks as they drive an automobile. And henceforth the intrusive technologies will be required in all new vehicles being manufactured and sold in the U.S.

New vehicles will be required to have passive monitoring systems to assess each driver’s behavior. An algorithm will determine if the driver is too impaired to operate the vehicle. If so, the vehicle will either be disabled, or some as yet unexplained system or entity will take control of it.

Several obvious questions arise.

What will constitute “impairment?” Who or what might take control of the vehicle, and in what specific circumstances? And how? How long will data detailing driver behavior be stored? Where? Who will have access to it? In what other situations might the government take control of a driver’s vehicle? Is this unconstitutional, contra to protections under the Bill of Rights?

And what about hackers?!

We have seen how other government mandates, programs, and policies, almost all supposedly “for our own good,” have worked out. Think of the “Patriot Act,” the Department of Homeland Security, the TSA, or the lockdown response to the recent coronavirus pandemic, to name but a few. If you wanted to work out at a gym, attend a family member’s wedding — or funeral— well, sorry.

Is it really far-fetched to imagine that you won’t be allowed to drive if you have exceeded your monthly greenhouse gas emission limit? Or that your car might be disabled if you are on your way to purchase a firearm or attend a Trump rally, or the future equivalent thereof?

I’m sure it is fairly simple to disable the GPS and cell antennas on vehicles. Perhaps have a switch so you can turn it on and off as needed.

The purpose of all these laws is to prevent freedom of travel.

Same reason they want public transport and electric cars.

The elites dream of a return to when serfs were tied to the land and could not vote with their feet.

“When you plug an EV into a public charger it collects everything”

Holy Cow! Is that true?

Regarding the monitoring gadgets in cars, will they be continuously connected to the internet, meaning you’ll have to pay for cell service for your car?

Section 24220 of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act mandates that
by 2026
cars must come with a ‘kill switch’. This tool can turn off the car if needed. It’s there to make roads safer and stop bad driving like when people drive drunk or too fast. Stopping high-speed chases before they get dangerous is another big reason for this law.

To: chiller; All

typically ambiguous

“by 2026”

Does that mean 2026 models ?

Or cars made in ‘25 , sold in ‘26, with a kill switch that must be activated ?

Time to buy

I restore & collect old Porsches that run like new and I drive daily.

Not a concern.

Now my wife’s ‘19 BMW 540i is a concern - as it is indeed monitored way too much.....but not total like Biden’s cars will be......

Not really, it's already been sent over 3g/4g for all cars built since about 2010. It's not an EV-only "feature".

I agree wholeheartedly. I'm afraid, unfortunately, that gas cars aren't safe either. It's too easy for the left to change regulations to make gasoline hard to come by and/or too expensive (IMHO it's still too expensive).

The same with electricity (i.e. forcing many power companies to shut down coal plants and switch to "clean burning natural gas" fueled plants, then as soon as Brandon gets in office he raises the price of natural gas to punish us for doing what they forced us to do).

Thus it may be best to have one of each type of car (gas car and EV). That way the left has to mess up both power and gas to immobilize us. That's one of the main reasons my wife and I have an EV car. If we want to make a long trip after the left messes up one fuel type, we take the other car (either the EV car or gas pickup).

Then bonus points if you live in the south and can set up solar to charge the EV. It takes a LOT of homework to make sure you do it well, that you spend enough to get the goody out of it (economies of scale) but not so much you don't get good ROTI (law of diminishing returns). That works well for us. So even if the left messes up both gas and power, it won't immobilize us from driving the 15K to 16K miles per year. (80% of our power in our all-electric home is homemade power, pulling only 20% from the grid)

“I’m sure it is fairly simple to disable the GPS and cell antennas on vehicles. Perhaps have a switch so you can turn it on and off as needed.”

The circuitry is designed to work pretty well even without the external antenna — just like your cell phone works without an external antenna. The circuitry itself is integrated into the ECU and can’t be disabled without disabling the vehicle. Engineers have had a long time to think about these things.
