Caving in to extremists is not a good idea. It’s the inmates running the asylum. This will only make things worse.

Celebration is fine, but when the emphasis is on the graduation and the degree, colleges get away with a lot less actual education.

We’re obviously in the latter days of a corrupted republic and empire, but deluding ourselves with empty celebrations is pulling us down even faster.

Remote college education is now the new normal. Good ! Lectures, term papers and tests can be done online.

Abandon expensive buildings. Fire overpaid administration leaders and staffs. Get rid of the lazy professors who don’t teach.

Fire the janitors and landscape crews. Fire the building maintenance people and those who prepare food. No dorms will be needed. Sell textbooks online. Sell all university vehicles.

There won’t be a physical campus where students are excluded, harassed or violently assaulted. It will be the end of crime on campus if there is NO CAMPUS.

Students won’t need big student loans.

Send diplomas by mail. Everybody wins !

To GC Parent: Columbia has done the same thing for a long time. We had around 600 graduating seniors compared to thousands of graduates of all the other schools that make up the University. Tha University ceremony was held on the South Field where the recent protest encampment was.

The smaller College Class Day on the Quad where the entrance to Hamilton Hall is located also gave the Valedictorian a chance to make his traditional speech. In our class, John Vaio, a Latin major gave his speech in Latin in which he twitted Harvard for giving up on Latin. His most memorable line: “O miserable men of Harvard.”

The board of trustees of Columbia hired an Egyptian Muslim as president, and they got what they paid for.

>> If families were less focused on the degrees, graduations, and prestige of the colleges, there would be more actual education going on in higher ed.

Of course!

I read somewhere not long ago that what you describe is actually happening — more high school graduates choosing technical and trade education over college, as well as more of the college-bound opting for state colleges — perhaps less prestigious, but definitely cheaper and likely better at educating.

I believe they have changed the graduation ceremonies down to the individual schools within the college(business, engineering….etc)

"Shut down Columbia University it’s finished"

Revoke Columbia University's academic accreditation.

Columbia should cancel all future graduations because they are not turning out grads who could pass a true exam on any subject. They could give all a “Glittering Jewel of Colossal Ignorance” award, though. As for the “Professors”, mass executions appear to the only solution. Not even close to kidding.

All those arrested should have this on their records. As an employer, I would want to know if someone gets upset they will trash my office.

I would want to know that despite a fancy college degree the candidate was as dumb as a rock.

Columbia University cancels their graduation ceremony due to the protests on campus

I’m wondering how many Left-leaning parents that sent their kids there are just fine with all the protesting. It might surprise us.

What is the number of protesters versus the non-protesters? Are they punishing the majority of students because of administration failures??

Reminds me of the old Li’l Abner comic strip from 1968 in which the Students Wildly Indignant about Nearly Everything (S.W.I.N.E.) take over the campus.
The terrified University Regents decide to sell the University! The only buyers were the Mafia who brings in the mob enforcers.
Here come the SWINE protesting!
I still get a thrill remembering how the leader of the S.W.I.N.E. used his front teeth to assault the brass knuckles of the mob enforcers. Who says brass won’t make a spark! These did. Big ones at that!
Anyone else remember that old comic strip? Could easily be reprinted today with no changes.

“...Remote college education is now the new normal...”

Is that really the best way?? Over the years most class taken have been in-house. Those taken remotely have been for convenience, or the only way he course was offered.

I found in-house learning much more effective. Lectures and written assignments can be delivered online, but I always found the give and take among the classmates was more instructive than just a lecture. Difficult problems and concepts may not be resolved in the lecture or written assignment, but working with classmates it becomes clear.
- just saying.

Our local state university does the same. There’s one big ceremony for all graduating students, but no one walks across the stage there. They walk across the stage at the smaller ceremonies held for each school at the college.

These are people who are masters of interoffice backstabbing and the gurus of how to ingratiate yourself so as to get a good parking place and a nice new desktop. As far as real world stuff goes, they are useless. They may wave Palestinian flags but will be the first for the head choppings.
