Shadow speaker: Hakeem Jeffries quietly wrests control from Mike Johnson
MSN ^ | 4/21/24 | Andrew Solender

Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) found himself in an unusual position for a minority leader last week:

It was he, not the House speaker, who had the ultimate power to decide whether legislation came to the floor.

Why it matters: Democrats got everything they wanted – a $95 billion foreign aid bill, the credit for passing it, and adversaries more divided than ever. In their telling, that total victory wasn't a sure thing.

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), a master legislative tactician, heaped praise on her successor: "He is fabulous. We're so proud of him."

One senior House Democrat told Axios: "It easily could have fallen apart ... He played the cards the way you'd want to play them."

"I would not want to play blackjack against him," the lawmaker added.

As Speaker and majority leader he gave the opposition everything they wanted and he got not one damn thing for the home team.

“I don’t know what the House GOP floor is. 50? 35?”

Conservative Orthodoxy is dead.

Conservatism without Nationalism is like Faith without Works. And none of these so called “conservatives” gives a crap about America or Americans.

I used to say that while Republicans were the majority of the White House, the Senate and the House (2018) Democrats were still in charge.

There are two parties in that house..and that's the way it is.

He presented it to the reps of ALL people and they voted for it. And that's the way it is. Get over it.

The problem here is that Trump publicly and wholeheartedly supported Johnson and his cabal of anti American idiots.

Well he did until he didn't. All of us, including Trump, wanted The Johnson to suceed. Anyone who claims they knew Johnson was a phony from before he was selected is lying.

Now that Johnson has failed, the "I told you so" crowd is quite active.

But it is inarguable she was the most effective Speaker in a century.

You're probably right.

It is very interesting, maybe even a thing for conspiracy theorists, to trace the course of the UK Conservative Party (Thatcher to Boris Johnson) and the US Republican Party (Nixon to Trump).

Populist landslide after populist landslide, with the correct promises (law and order, nation > ideology, traditional values > nuttyness, border control, privilege the native population, etc), every single time, sold out and betrayed by the Party, by now with threats of prison for Boris Johnson and Donald Trump (unthinkable in the Thatcher/Reagan years), and, for the next act, collapse of the offending parties into tiny factions in the elected Houses of Commons and Representatives.

I hope all you followers of the FR Imaginary Republican Party are ready for the next act, because in the UK and the US, it's right around the corner.

Democrats have run the Federal Government since at least Woodrow Wilson, but FDR made it impossible reverse via elections.

At best, we can get a temporary slowdown when electing an all Republican Congress and Executive.

THIS century, certainly.

Sam Rayburn and Tip O'Neill would beg to differ over 1925-2024.

Yes, Johnson totally capitulated, got absolutely nothing in return, helped divide the Party even more by p*ssing off the base, and the democrats gloated, laughed, took a victory lap,,,,

and rubbed it in his face the the Ukranian flag party!

> Anyone who claims they knew Johnson was a phony from before he was selected is lying.

I am not sure if that's true.

I think Johnson acted in good faith when he first took the seat, but then he found out "how Washington D.C. really works" during his freshman orientation.

If he didn't go along, than the Republican caucus would have focused all of their efforts on getting him expelled.

Yes, but was this before or after Mike (the Johnson) Johnson cast the deciding vote with the democrats to fund Ukraine?

And after the traitor did that, Trump did what? That’s right - he “unfriended” him.

The FR Imaginary Republican Party

The destruction of our country means nothing to them as long as there are more Rs than Ds.
