The only ones for whom this is a proxy war are those who somehow think that a Russian victory is a strike against the “neocons and globalists.” In their mind Ukraine’s loss of freedom and subjugation to Russia is a small price to pay for them to revel in their fantasies. For saner minds it is a war for Ukrainian independence against an aggressive and neo-imperialistic Russia. This war was not started by the “Globalists,” but by Vladimir Putin.
You will find that Putinism is much like islam in that the converts are often the most radical. Your average Russian couldn’t care less about these issues is far more interested in kitchen table economics and considers war over backwater Donbas to be totally madness.
Additionally, this war has no benefits for Russia and the Russian people. The costs are horrible, both in personnel and resources. Even if Russia were to win militarily on the ground, all they would win would be a hostile population that would continue the war as an insurgency. Russians need to accept the reality that the Ukrainians do not consider themselves Russians and will no longer accept Russian rule. At this point, the only reason for Russia to continue this useless war is for the prestige of the Putin regime. Unfortunately, there are many who look at this war as sporting event, cheering on their favorite side. Others see it as a proxy war against their hated neocons and globalists. This is just a sign of their sense of impotency in domestic politics. For the Ukrainians, however, this is a fight for their national survival.
