A heroic police officer fatally shot a knife-wielding maniac who killed five people and stabbed several others — including a small child — inside a popular Sydney mall Saturday afternoon.
Authorities received calls around 3:30 p.m. local time that a knife-wielding man was attacking people at Westfield Bondi Junction, NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Anthony Cooke said during a press conference.
Footage obtained by 9News Sydney showed the suspect, wearing a gold and green rugby jersey and shorts, brandishing a long knife and approaching several horrified shoppers.
Hundreds of people were captured running for the mall’s exits during the stabbing spree.
At around 3:10 p.m., the suspect “moved through the center” in a crowd of about “nine people” inside the mall and launched his attack, causing “harm to those people we believe by stabbing them,” Cooke said.
Several posts on social media showed crowds fleeing the mall and police cars and emergency services rushing to the area.
Albanese condemned the “horrific” attack on the innocent shoppers.
“The devastating scenes at Bondi Junction are beyond words or understanding. Australians will be shocked this evening,” Albanese said. “This was a horrific act of violence, indiscriminately targeted at innocent people going about an ordinary Saturday doing their shopping tonight.
“It’s such a shock this happens in a country such as ours, where people should be able to go about their shopping on a Saturday afternoon without any thought that there is risk involved.”

As to knife control the TWOT mayor of London has called for it for years. No effect, but that was not the goal.
A single carry in the mall could have stopped this in minutes. Just fire shots into the ceiling. That would have given the unarmed Aholes time to get clear. Yes, you are an Ahole if you cannot be bothered to protect yourself.
Six dead is the price of expecting the State to protect you. I wonder if the families of those six will notice.
Ridiculous - I had to replace my Swiss Army knife while in Oz in 2001 and had no trouble doing so in Sydney, carried it on me the rest of the trip. Nobody mentioned a “no-carry” rule.
Whatever you do Australian government, don’t under any circumstances allow your noble citizens to protect themselves with firearms!

A lot of our junk shopping malls (and many other places too) are “gun free” zones. Same rotten mentality only affecting the law abiding.

An officer has to notice the knife in order to enforce the law.
The few enforcement actions I read of while there were for having a knife in a bar, which was forbidden.
I saw numerous knives for sale in Australia. Some clearly forbidden to be imported by a traveler.
Australia has an interesting federal system. The federal government is responsible for the borders and imports/exports.
The state governments are not.
The rule is: can you articulate a "good reason" to have the knife with you? I was told the "magic words" were "food preparation" and "safety tool" to escape vehicle.

England has enacted laws against possessing a knife or any stabbing instrument such as a screwdriver of a metal punch.
