The rule used to be that for a film to be Oscar eligible, it had to play in a theater in New York City or Los Angeles for one week.
If that's still the rule, then it wasn't about the money. His film is now Oscar eligible, and it can now go on to a wider audience on streaming.

On a brighter and somewhat related note, just five minutes ago I looked up Eva Marie Saint because I’m watching some old movies the last few days, and found that she is alive at 99 years old.
It will still be a contender for next year’s Oscars.
