Dartmouth University’s men’s basketball team voted to unionize on Tuesday, bringing them one step closer to becoming the first collegiate labor union.
The whole team participated in a 13-2 vote in favor of joining the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 560. The school will have until March 12 to file an objection to the union election with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).
After objections are filed, there will be 10 days for both parties to file a request for an appeal to the decision.
The school has already put out a statement emphasizing the athletes are not employees, so it doesn’t believe this union “is appropriate.”

Its sheltered elitist kids living in their make-believe world
Cool. Imagine they’ll score 20 points then sit the rest of the game.
It’s all sunshine and rainbows in Hanover, NH
Agreed. Hard to believe William Eaton, the man who led the first US marine expedition, was educated at Dartmouth.
I thought that Ivy League colleges did not award athletic scholarships.
I like that they unionized. They can all get equal playing time and go 0-32 every season.
I am trying to understand who is on the hook to pay? Colleges can offer scholarships and living money, but they can’t outright pay players as in a wage.
The NCAA is now entirely feckless. What a mess.
Simply disband the Basketball team.........................
Like the military unions proposed (”General, you don’t have a majority in any of the union locals’ votes so your decision to make the offensive at first light is overruled, sir.”
“Coach, the players cited the new rule that no extra workout session can be enforced within 24 hours of the end of a previous one. And they are going on strike for better food. All organic.”
Expel them.

So, will they be cleaning toilets?
Or maybe putting tampon dispensers in MENS?
Hey - There’s a lifetime career just waiting for you . . . .
Here’s a radical idea...drop ALL sports completely and start worrying only about educating students.
Maybe we’ll see how much the Ivy League loses in basketball shortly before this team is disbanded.
Games would take five hours with all the union mandated breaks and lunch
No games on 27 federal holidays
Athletes wouldn’t play the first 15 minutes or the last 15 minutes because they have to change clothes and wash up on game time
Every foul would get called by the referees...and then subject to a union hearing with the shop steward
under the table recruitment bonuses would have to be given to all athletes equally
They always have been but the world is just now realizing it.
All because of NIL.....next they’ll want a minimum signing fee
All because of NIL.....next they’ll want a minimum signing fee, insurance program, pension, 401K.....
The program will get disbanded…
