Denver Health at “Critical Point” as 8,000 Migrants Make 20,000 Emergency Visits

The Denver hospital system is turning away local residents because it is flooded with migrant visits.

Denver Health CEO Donna Lynne warned the center is in a crucial moment due to unexpected costs associated with immigrant visits.

What I think is not being said is that Denver Health is at a critical, critical point and that we need to take this up in 2024,” Lynne told the Denver City Council, according to the Denver Post.

Eight-thousand migrants from Central America accounted for approximately 20,000 visits in 2023. Denver Health asked the Federal Emergency Management Agency to provide funds for immigrants’ medical costs. The state and federal governments aren’t reimbursing the hospital, which spent $136 million for patients who didn’t pay.

Beckers Hospital Review notes CEO says ‘It’s Going to Break Denver Health’

The health system is overwhelmed with care costs for uninsured patients, particularly migrants — 36,000 of whom have arrived in Denver since December 2022, according to The Denver Post.

“Where do you think the migrants are getting care? They are getting care at Denver Health,” Dr. Lynne said at a Jan. 9 finance and governance committee meeting. Her remarks were reported by CBS Colorado on Jan. 12.

Denver Health has treated more than 8,000 migrants who lack legal documentation in the past year, totaling about 20,000 visits, according to Steven Federico, MD, a pediatrician at the health system.

The majority of these patients are coming from Venezuela and arrive needing treatment for chronic and communicable diseases after making the difficult journey.

Eric Lavonas, MD, an emergency physician at Denver Health, expects the situation to worsen as subzero temperatures sweep across Colorado, exposing unhoused, uninsured populations to frostbite and hypothermia. In 2020, the health system had about $60 million in uncompensated care costs. Last year, costs sprung to $136 million, a quarter of which came from caring for non-Denver residents.

Due to the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act, Denver Health cannot turn patients away from the emergency room and has resorted to other cost-cutting measures. The system closed 15 of its 78 inpatient beds for substance misuse and mental health treatment and did away with planned salary increases.

Denver Health lost $35 million in 2022, and 2023 could have been worse had the system not received some outside help, according to the Post...

I’m semi retired basically run my husband’s micro biz and we have to pay $1200 a month for a marketplace plan with a $7000 or $8000 deductible. I’m in the “donut hole” age 63 and my husband is only 55 (stb 56). I’m using up all my savings to pay for the illegal aliens. Which disgusts me in particular b/c I was a LEGAL alien and then became a naturalized citizen the proper way.

We don’t take any meds and we seldom go to the doctor. We’ve tried sharing plans but they are just as bad and we are basically paying for catastrophic situations only.

Here comes more taxpayer bailouts for democrat run entities. Taxpayers should never pay for non citizen care. But hey, we are doing it I. w and TX.. probably every state. Non citizens should not be protected as citizens are.
If so, this is taxation without representation.

With my health insurance now costing more than $32k per year, I guess this was part of the scumbag’s plan.

A few months ago my wife had a 20 minute surgery on her toes.

We got bills totaling $75K for this brief outpatient procedure.

Thank goodness insurance paid for most of it (after we paid a hefty deductible), but it's obvious patients who actually pay for the services they receive are vastly overcharged by the medical professionals to recover some of the losses they incur by treating so many of those who do not pay a dime.

Did the article state ANYWHERE that Brandon opening the flood gates has CAUSED this? If so, I couldn’t find it.

It’s everywhere.... Each year about 16,000 babies are born at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas. The hospital estimates about 70 percent of them are delivered by undocumented mothers. That was in 2006... it’s likely MUCH higher percentage now. We must end birthright citizenship which rewards those who broke our laws by being here ! The taxpayers of Dallas county are paying for this as are all who purchase health insurance as providers must raise their charges to those who pay the bills to cover the costs of providing unreimbursed care or they cease to exist.
It is not just in health care... the school taxes rise exponentially by providing education to illegal residents ... the legal system is overwhelmed by additional costs incurred every time an interaction occurs with someone here illegally... taxes rise to cover social services to illegals....to paraphrase Senator Graham of Texas, there are too many in the boat and not enough rowing the boat.

Denver Mayor: Abbott Doesn’t See Migrants Are Following Statue of Liberty, Also Stop Sending Us So Many of Them
Breitbart ^ | 01/13/2024 | Ian hatchett

Posted on 1/13/2024, 12:10:41 PM by ChicagoConservative27

On Friday’s broadcast of CNN’s “The Source,” Denver Mayor Mike Johnston stated that Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) doesn’t see people crossing the border as people “who are trying to do exactly what the Statue of Liberty says, which is, send us your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” He also stated that he hopes Texas stops sending migrants to Denver during the winter storm and “A strategy of having folks just sent to New York and Chicago and Denver I think is not setting them up for success or setting our cities up for success.”

Way back, our hometown hospital closed its doors because it wasn’t getting enough pay from all the illegals. The government, aka us, pays out the nose for illegals. However, it delays US citizens from getting prompt care. Denver, they voted for it.

Spent half the night in the ER years ago waiting to get little one seen but everyone in there was illegal and didn’t seem to need much of anything. The only doctor didn’t speak English or Spanish so guessing he came from a country that was first come, first served vs severity. Ended up going to the pediatrician the next morning. Lesson learned to call around to find the least crowded ER and hope you get there in time.

Additionally, illegal immigration is the spearpoint of Coward-Driven.

If your 3rd-wave Venez human waste is clogging ERs, the knock-on effects are truly frightening:

Coward-Driven.

Nothing new. Several years ago, I had to have a procedure that insurance didn’t cover and was hit with double the cost. Finally had a gal in the billing office slip up saying it’s because foreigners don’t pay so someone has to pay their bills. Of course, we still had to pay the grand total.

Last time Mr. b went in for cataracts in one eye, he got charged for two. Insurance paid its part but we were still out of pocket. That argument went on forever. He’s ready now for the other eye so who knows how many eyes they’ll charge for this time.

Our healthcare system is being overwhelmed by invaders. It takes 6 months to get a doctor’s appointment in my hometown. When we do go, the waiting room is full of non-English speaking people who bring their entire family with them.

“unexpected costs associated with immigrant visits.”

What’s “unexpected” about those costs?

Never forget - this all starts with EMTALA.

EMTALA, signed by the amiable dunce, encoded into law for the first time that services had to be provided by “hospitals” without limits and without payment - and no thought that the State would make up the difference.

Americans are very bad at seeing long term consequences. The Left passes something, six months later things are as before, and “well, I guess it’s not that bad”, on to the next Leftist cause.

They have a 100 year plan. “Think of it always, speak of it never”.

Medicare + EMTALA has precipitated what you can all see now. That the system you are used to lasted 60 years is a tribute to the people who ran it for that long, but collapse and nationalization is now right around the corner.

When EMTALA was passed, its authors were most afraid that legal status would become an issue, so they included a strict prohibition against status checking, and included (just because they felt like piling on) the requirement that all medical services in a hospital anywhere in the US be made available in 73 languages 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

“ Taxpayers should never pay for non citizen care.”

What should have always been done is to add up the expenses and send the bill to their home nation. If, as is so often the case, their home nation is getting money from the US, either official US aide or via remittances from non-citizens here sending money back home, that money should be used to pay the accrued medical bills.
