Where is the best (and worst) state to retire in 2024? Fascinating study looks not just at health care and taxes but quality of golf courses too
DAILY MAIL ^ | 24 January 2024 | TILLY ARMSTRONG

Florida earned its reputation as the retirement capital of the US..

A fixed income in retirement can go a lot further in some states than others ..

...

To make the most of your retirement savings, you should retire in a state where the cost of living and tax rates are friendly to retirees, if you have the resources to. You should also consider factors like the quality of the state's healthcare system and the abundance of activities that you enjoy.'

Colorado, which ranked second for the best state to retire in 2024, offers similarly taxpayer-friendly conditions, with no estate or inheritance levies on seniors.

Virginia and Delaware, while not offering the lowest living costs, also have low tax burdens for retirees - with no estate or inheritance taxes.

...

Rounding off the top five .. is Wyoming. It too does not have estate or inheritance taxes, and scores highly for overall wellbeing - with one of the lowest crime rates in the country.

On the other end of the spectrum .. Kentucky as the worst place to retire in 2024.

The Bluegrass State was among the worst 10 states for quality of life and access to healthcare - and is among the bottom five when it comes to life expectancy.

It also ranked in the bottom 20 states for affordability. Kentucky does impose an inheritance tax, the rate of which is determined by the size of the inheritance and who is receiving it.

It also has an income tax rate of 4.5 percent.

...

New Jersey is the second-least affordable state for retirees .. only falling behind the notoriously expensive state of New York.

My wife’s from KY. It’s an old tobacco state with a ton of smokers, so lung cancer and heart disease jack up the mortality rates. Land is dirt cheap. So is the cost of living. Problem is that the Democrats ran the state since the Civil War, so a welfare mentality has been stamped in the culture of some areas.

I live in Oklahoma also. Owned a distributor ship for a National food product for 25 years. Yes OK has sales tax on retail end of food chain.
I attended many National meeting during my time in that business.
One thing I learned was that most states with no retail sales tax, collect it on the wholesale end. It is then built into the items price.

My limited understanding of the culture of KY is that they elect Rand, suggesting they can’t be too bad a people, and that Bear Bryant famously stated that they don’t have their priorities right. LOL (more emphasis on basketball than football)

Ha ha Okie! I do get a smile on my face when they talk about the blue state exodus to red states and they rarely if not ever mention Oklahoma. Fine by me.

Two years ago I moved from Central FL to rural NW Tennessee. My small town has a population of 2000, and everybody knows everybody here on a first name basis. We have a decent city park with a walking path and good tennis courts, and a county golf course.

The people here can only be described as “down home”. I’ve developed some wonderful friendships here, and have a number of teen workers whose company I’ve greatly enjoyed.

During the summer I have songbirds and cicadas everywhere, and at night I have the sound of bullfrogs croaking beside my little koi pond. The sky is filled with stars at night.

Property values are very low. There’s a 4-bed, 1940’s house a couple of streets over that has been advertised for $50k. I’m looking at starting to flip some houses around here, which might provide good retirement income (I’ve already got a work crew chomping at the bit to get started).

That is true. There is a certain segment who believe the democrats are looking out for them finanically while anyone else is trying to take money out of their pockets.

When we retired my criteria was Second Amendment friendly, no motorcycle helmet laws, tax friendly, no or minimal public transit, not Democrat controlled, to name a few. And it had to be west of the Mississippi River.

Welcome to Iowa!

Being from Tacoma, I can see you are experiencing a lot of hidden costs. In Tacoma, the rainfall causes moss on the roof, the rapid development of potholes to wreck the suspension of your car (ball joints=$600) and the need to paint more often. If you have to go across the Narrows Bridge, the toll is $4.50.If you have to go to Ketron Island, the Value Pass ferry, one-way, is (Vehicle up to 22 feet) (5 trips) $87.25. Tacoma is #7 in the nation’s most dangerous cities. The sales tax is 10.3 cents/dollar—the highest in the nation. The B and O tax rates are: Retailing: 0.471% Wholesaling: 0.484% Manufacturing: 0.484%.
Costs to license a pet: Unaltered dog or cat = $55; altered dog = $20 and altered cat = $12. The typical car insurance = an average of $515 per year for minimum coverage and $1,410 per year for full coverage. Cost of gasoline at Arco = $3.90/gal.

The cost can go on . . .

My two trips to Maui were with mixed reactions. Lucky I didn’t retire there. The fire took out some beautiful areas.

I fell in love with Hawaii in the seventies. Lived there thirty years and had a life that would seem like a fantasy if I told you about it. But Hawaii today is nothing like Hawaii of the seventies, eighties and nineties.

Never going back unless it’s to stop for groceries on the way to somewhere else.

These surveys are almost always biased towards the result desired by the author.

Agree.

I love how some surveys point out things like diversity of cuisine, as if retirees on restricted diets care about eating the latest Nigerian or Cambodian fusion dishes.

For me, I want access to health care, low/no taxes, access to cruise ports, and weather that I don't have to shovel.

Medical care is great in Louisville and Lexington. Can’t speak for other places. I just got back from 2 weeks of work in KY. It was bitter cold and I was pretty miserable. Now I’m back where I belong, in SoFlo.

Hern and Brecheen cover the eastern districts of Oklahoma. They are both pretty conservative.
Not sure what is going on out west.
Tulsa and Oklahoma City and surrounding counties pick our US Senators.
The rest of us just watch and shake our heads.

We’ve lived in KY for 3 years. We did considerable research before we moved. One big factor was that we could live on about 55% of what we’d need in NY or MA, where we’re from. We could have purchased 2 nice homes for what we got in MA when we sold. Property taxes are reasonable, we’re used to sales taxes anywhere, gasoline is cheaper, and they welcomed us with our guns. (We actually called the sheriff’s office in the county we were considering. I wanted to be completely legal and aboveboard. They said: “No problem!
Bring ‘em on in.”) Also, the folks here have welcomed us “recovering Yankees” with open arms.

One of our relatives exclaimed: “WHAT ABOUT HEALTH CARE???” when we told her about the move. We’re no farther from a hospital than we were in NY, and our hospital in MA was the now infamous Milford Regional Medical Center. There are ample doctors from which to choose, unlike our area of MA. So far it has been win-win. Lesson: don’t base your retirement decisions on anyone else’s list. Do your own research. Visit the area (we made 2 trips to KY, one summer and one winter).
