To protect an endangered owl species, government biologists propose killing off other owls

The survival of one owl species hinges on the demise of another.

That’s what the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service argues in its proposal to allow the agency to shoot hundreds of thousands of barred owls over the next 30 years in West Coast forests. The service says the barred owl, which is not native to the region, is crowding out the spotted owl, a close genetic relative.

Without action against the barred owls, service biologists say the spotted owl could disappear from parts of Washington and Oregon within a few years and eventually go extinct.

The proposal is the latest in a series of efforts to save the spotted owl, whose decline became a rallying point for environmentalists opposed to logging in the Pacific Northwest in the 1980s.

Human influence — as European settlers spread west — likely caused the barred owl to colonize the Pacific Northwest. Now, the proposal raises questions about how far people should go to save a species and the costs of righting a historic ecological wrong.

“It’s not the barred owls’ fault. It’s our fault for bringing them out here. It’s not the spotted owls’ fault either,” said Robin Brown, a Fish and Wildlife Service biologist who is the agency’s barred owl strategy lead. “The species’ future is extinction if we don’t manage barred owls. The writing is on the wall.”

The agency’s proposal, which calls for a total of more than 470,000 barred owls to be “lethally removed” — killed with shotguns — remains in draft form and is open for public comment through Jan. 16.

It’s our fault for bringing them out here.

We all remember seeing pictures in our textbooks of pioneers, fur traders, etc. bringing their barred owls with them out west. /s

And now they are branded as ‘colonizers’ as well!

Why is the Spotted Owl more deserving of life than the other owl species? It has never gone well when man has sought to alter nature’s balance.

Yes, sending a battalion of hunters out to shoot this owl but not that owl, which looks almost just like the first owl. This scheme had to be hatched in the DC bell jar, where other rarefied species flourish.

Let's shoot Barred Owls until the too become endangered, then they'll be safe from the environazis at least.
Typical commie solution, they can never make anything better, they can only make something else much worse instead.

I would not be surprised if they will discover, too late, that the Spotted Owl is dependent on other owls to properly balance the ecosystem.

Clinton shut down logging. Perhaps the owls like a little more open space.

Spots or Barred. Still taste like chicken.< br>
Weirdly enough, most people don’t know that chicken tastes eerily close to bald eagle.

A small, “genetically distinct” population is gold, for regulators. It can be milked for as long as it exists. Locally, we had the “Northern” Snowy Plover. It was just the northernmost members of a population that extends down the coast, into Baja California. But, they were “endangered” because there were so few of them north of the OR/CA border. Never mind that they encroached this far without help. Now, the nesting areas need to be closed to human activity, and potential predators need to be poisoned.

AGAIN

30 years ago i was on the spotted owl survey of my B.L.M. district.

it was 1 giant fraud from beginning to lying wildlife biologist end.

i said it then to my boss..

( after my wildlife biologist admitted falsifying data )

and ill say it here again.

check the suitable habitat acreage numbers. . check the total acreage numbers .( check for bait and switch ) . Check
The
Numbers

Check
The
Math.

( btw, both these owls interbreed,,)

spit.

The little secret being they’re both the same species.

killed of by its cousin

Not killed, seduced. They interbreed, and since the spots are a recessive gene, the offspring end up barred.

These DIMWITS need to explain just how specifically “European Settlers spreading west” caused the Barred Owl to “colonize the Pacific Northwest”.

What exactly did “European Settlers” do, evict them from their original Indian barns?
Make them line up for the FEATHERED TRAIL OF TEARS?

Did the “European Settlers” order them out of their eastern lands and make them move to western reservations?

These are questions that really need to be answered before the U S Fish and Wildlife Service starts COMMITING OWL GENOCIDE!
