Academic heavyweights start to speak out against wokester universities: A tide is slowly turning. One hopes it opens a floodgate

With the resignation of woke University of Pennsylvania president Liz Magill, following an execrable performance addressing antisemitism in Congress, some kind of dam has broken. Now academics with actual achievements are beginning to speak out against the wokesterism that has laid low the reputations of their universities.

CNN commentator Fareed Zakaria, who's best described as a left-leaning moderate, has thrown down the gauntlet about woke universities, calling them indoctrination centers, not places of learning, and demanded that universities return to their core mission of seeking the actual truth, demanding excellence, instead of creating their own "truths."

He's on fire here:

My take: pic.twitter.com/smjkQ9fngE — Fareed Zakaria (@FareedZakaria) December 10, 2023

He wrote up his remarks in this CNN commentary America’s top universities should abandon their long misadventure into politics, retrain their gaze on their core strengths and rebuild their reputations as centers of research and learning.

My take:

— Fareed Zakaria (@FareedZakaria) December 10, 2023">here, concluding:

What we saw in the House hearing this week was the inevitable result of decades of the politicization of universities. America’s top colleges are no longer seen as bastions of excellence but as partisan outfits, which means they will keep getting buffeted by these political storms as they emerge. They should abandon this long misadventure into politics, retrain their gaze on their core strengths and rebuild their reputations as centers of research and learning.

He's not just criticizing wokesters, he's offering a way out -- through the sorely needed return to focus on excellence.

He cites DEI as a villain, discriminating against achievement in favor of skin color, along with racial quotas in admissions, again, penalizing the achievers in favor of racial numbers, then speech codes, which are obvious chillers of free speech,

Well, Fareed Zakaria is going to be in trouble - when even leftists like him can see what a disaster DEI is, you'd hope we might see an end in sight. But I expect he will "clarify" shortly and apologize, and universities like Harvard, sitting on billions in endowments, are simply going to ride out the current uproar and keep doing what they're doing.

Bullsh!t. This happened at the same time as the schools are pushing DEI on all of the students.

Liar and hypocrites.

“resignation of woke University of Pennsylvania president Liz Magill”

Resigned as prez.....she’s still a tenured professor there....this isn’t exactly the victory I for one was hoping for.

I saw this same thing happen in 2001 right after the Twin Towers were attacked on 9/11.

The University I worked for at the time suddenly became all Rah-Rah pro-USA, and even passed out little American Flags to put on our desks, and started selling American Flag crossed with the University’s Flag lapel pins.

It lasted about a year, then slowly went back to the same liberal anti-American crap when we invaded Iraq.

They’ll do or say what is necessary until the attention shifts elsewhere, then they’ll return to their normal Woke agenda.

Tide is being held back a bit, for now. The left literally has decades of rot that has infested our educational institutions from Pre-K to the highest levels of miseducation.
Conservatives really just need to wake their sorry asses up and vote the turds out. Too many sit back and just take it.

I’ll state the obvious. Being Fareed Zakaria, he may be given a chance to recant. If a white person had said this, he’d be in the tumbrel and en route to the guillotine already.

As long as no administrator loses their job.

Just like U Penn President Liz Magill who recently resigned but will remain at U Penn, many University administrators are also tenured faculty, and are almost impossible to fire.

This “change” is due every bit as much to the potential loss of funding and donations than to a reconsideration of their immoral values.

She calls this a paradigm shift but it is way too soon to draw that conclusion. Nobody goes down without a fight, and that includes the totalitarian Left. They will take some casualties, like these ridiculous women, but will continue implacably to march, right over their bodies if need be.

You won't be able to convince them that they are wrong. They are very “religious” about their beliefs. Many (most?) belief that it must be done at all costs. Even if irreparable damage is done.

I don't trust them to correct their problems. Only lie and cover up and “promise” to do better next time.

Amid Calls for Gay’s Resignation, Harvard Corporation Convenes for Scheduled Meeting

governing board, meets in Loeb House. Pic By Julian J. Giordano

The Harvard Corporation and the Board of Overseers — the University’s governing bodies — convened on campus Sunday for a regularly scheduled meeting that comes five days after calls for President Claudine Gay to resign grew following her congressional testimony, according to a source close to the governing boards.

In a break between the board meetings, Harvard Corporation Senior Fellow Penny S. Pritzker ’81 did not answer repeated questions from The Crimson about whether she would ask Gay to step down, when approached by a reporter Sunday afternoon.

Pritzker, who is on campus for a meeting of the governing boards, ignored the questions as she and Shirley M. Tilghman — another member of the Corporation — entered a vehicle.

While the meeting of the Corporation and the Board of Overseers follows their ordinary timeline, the backdrop against which the convening takes place is nothing but extraordinary.

During the hearing before the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, alongside fellow witnesses University of Pennsylvania President Elizabeth Magill and MIT President Sally A. Kornbluth — Gay repeatedly declined to directly answer a question from Rep. Elise M. Stefanik ’06 (R-N.Y.) about whether calls for the genocide of Jews violate Harvard’s policies on bullying and harassment.

The exchange with Stefanik went viral, and Magill resigned Saturday amid the backlash and pressure from UPenn’s board of trustees.

Gay, who had previously faced only a few isolated calls to resign from the presidency, has received mounting pressure to step down. On Friday, more than 70 members of Congress — including two Democrats — signed a letter to Harvard governance calling on Gay to resign.

The boards are expected to (a) discuss the backlash to Gay’s testimony and (b) make a decision on whether they should issue a public statement in support of Gay, the president they (c) elected to lead Harvard less than one year ago.

While the Corporation has remained silent about the future of Gay’s tenure, an increasing number of Harvard faculty members have spoken up to express support for Gay.

Julie Platt, who replaces Scott Bok as Penn trustees chairman, is every bit as an obnoxious Leftist as Liz Magill. Platt just doesn’t hate secular Jews. Otherwise, they’re the same.
