So, a small truck with a powerful engine canโ€™t meet the mileage standards and the manufacturer would have to pay a steep penalty on each truck.

But nothing keeps them from making powerful engines that would swap out easily. Aftermarket, of course.

“Would be interesting to see the engine bay.”

Being not enviro-dork certified, probably can actually see the engine...

I lost my 1996 Ford F-150 in a flood five years ago (it was parked and the flood went several feet over it). I only had 125K miles on it. I looked into having it rebuilt but it would cost far more than it was worth.

Damn I miss that truck.

Theirs were almost all Soviet or Chinese 12.7s until Joe gave them all that hardware.

Nope. We can't have them because EPA created a mileage requirement formula based on foot print. The formula makes it impossible to build a small truck for the US market anymore. This is why the S10, small Ranger, small Toyota, small Nissan etc disappeared.

What did you have done to it? I’m planning to do a restomod to my ‘72 Cheyenne Super. I bought it when it was new. I think it will make a better truck than I can buy or want to buy.

My dream for years has been for Toyota to bring back their 1980s little pickup that only had the bare minimum without all the bells and whistles that everyone could afford.

The sides fold up or down—just like VW’s pickup trucks from 1959, now selling at auctions for $25,000.

I am picking up a brand new Ford Maverick for 21,500 plus 1500 shipping in a couple of weeks. Ford found the market and Toyota is playing catchup. Buying my truck off a dealers lot will cost 10000 dollars over MSRP. You have to order it.

I ordered a 2024 Maverick on the first day Ford accepted orders. I have no idea when to expect delivery. Your post inspires cautious optimism โ˜บ๏ธ๐Ÿ‘

I had an 1988 Toyota 4WD pickup truck. I bought it new for $10,800. They didn’t call them the Tacoma back then because it was before they came out with the T100 or Tundra.
It was the 2.4 liter 4 cylinder with a 6’ bed. A basic stripped down pick up. The kind where all the beds rusted out at the horizontal seam. These were the ones with an engine that ran forever.

When I sold it in 1999 I had two guys try to buy it for cheap money to send it overseas. One guy said he sent them to Asia. Another said he sold them in Central America. They were both looking for trucks that would not pass inspection in the USA. They would buy Toyota or Nissan/Datsun only. Load four into a container and ship them overseas. They would pay $1000 and sell them for $4000+ in other countries.

I sold my truck pretty quickly for $2995 cash. However, a couple years after that we got involved in Afghanistan. What do they constantly show on TV ? Taliban guys running around in beat to crap Toyota pickups just like the one I had. EXCEPT, theirs frequently had a machine gun mounted in the back. Hence my previous post.

They also tried to destroy one FOUR different times. Including parking it on a tidal ramp on the North Sea. When the tide came in it was washed out to sea. They sent divers to retrieve it. Eventually draining the sea water out. It started right back up.

The last episode they put the same truck on top of a 15 story building scheduled to be blown up in a demolition. The again retrieved it from the pile of debris and drove it into the studio. The frame was broken in half on the one side but it still ran.

Oh yeah, I totally get the Afghanistan / Middle Eastern technical.

A relative had the answer. He carried an M240 when in those parts and knows how to use it!

I seriously looked at the Maverick, but it only has a maximum towing capacity of 4,000 pounds and that is with the engine upgrade and the towing package. I want to be able to tow trailers with my pickup.

OTOH, I refuse to pay $70K and higher for a pickup truck, so that only leaves 10 years old or older used trucks.
