Ukraine hits Russian warship after 15-missile salvo on Crimea shipyard

Ukraine fired 15 cruise missiles at a Russian shipyard in occupied Crimea, hitting a warship in an attack that could further undermine Moscow’s offensive capabilities.

French-supplied SCALP missiles struck the Russian vessel stationed at the Zalyv dockyard in the port city of Kerch on Saturday, Lt Gen Mykola Oleshchuk, the commander of Ukraine’s air force said.

The warship was armed with Kalibr cruise missiles that have frequently been used by Russia to strike targets inside Ukraine, he added.

“I confirm,” Gen Oleshchuk said on Sunday morning after posting a message the evening before which said the Ukrainian attack had probably hit its target.

Ukrainian media named the Russian warship as the Askold, a small Karakurt-class warship that is armed with eight Kalibr missiles. The Askold was reportedly going through its final fittings at the harbour before being commissioned into the Black Sea Fleet.

The Askold is an 800T Corvette, and she was brand new, about to be commissioned. It has 8 VLS tubes, and they were empty as the ship was not yet in service.

No missiles aboard.

And she may be lost, that is not confirmed.

What IS confirmed is that Ukraine expended about $20 million worth of cruise missiles (15 of them) to take out this little Corvette....and most importantly, get a headline.

Correction.

Those missiles are $2.5mil each.

Ukraine expended $37.5 million to take out a Corvette that cost $34 million to build.

Hilarious.

Well, at least they got a couple of dozen headlines out of it...

The Storm Shadows were free to Ukraine and the $34 million Russian Kalibr ship has a giant irreparable hole in the side.

“the Ukrainian attack had probably hit its target”

Sounds like a Hamas missile.

Kalibr ship is toast. Hit twice in the side just the the sub in Sevastopol. Too damn funny.

“Hit twice in the side just like the the sub in Sevastopol.”

The Minsk.

It has since begun to be disassembled and stripped of parts, indicating that Russian plans are to scrap that sub.

I wonder how credible is the Russian claim of shooting down 13 Storm Shadow/SCALP cruise missiles?

Previously (as in the strike on the Black Sea Fleet HQ), they have been unable to intercept them at all.

Perhaps far fewer were fired, or more damage was done (or both).

It’s not the cost, it’s reducing the Russian navy in the Black Sea. Minus 1 is always good.

I think what’s hilarious is that the Ukie cheerleaders can’t see what this means for our US Navy in constricted waters like the eastern Mediterranean...

“Ukie cheerleaders can’t see what this means for our US Navy in constricted waters like the eastern Mediterranean...”

Clearly, it means one less Russian Kalibr Missile carrier.

We can end the war if Russia withdraw troops from the Occupied territories of Ukraine in return for international recognition of Crimea.

To me, that's the deal you got to take. Even though Crimea is Ukrainian and we shouldn't reward the Russians for doing that.
