In one of the most strident criticisms of Israel yet by a prominent American politician, Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont is accusing Israel of violating international law.
"For many, it is no secret that Gaza has been an open-air prison, with millions of people struggling to secure basic necessities," Sanders said in a statement issued on Wednesday.
Following Hamas's terrorist attack on Israel over the weekend, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant announced a "complete siege" of Gaza, the densely-populated territory where Gaza rules. Gallant said that would include "no electricity, no food, no fuel" for the territory's roughly 2 million residents.
"The targeting of civilians is a war crime, no matter who does it," said Sanders. "Israel's blanket denial of food, water, and other necessities to Gaza is a serious violation of international law and will do nothing but harm innocent civilians."
Targeting civilians, even during a time of war, violates Common Article 3 of the Geneva Conventions of 1949.
Sanders also reiterated his prior condemnation of the Hamas attack, calling it a "major setback for any hope of peace and reconciliation in the region – and justice for the Palestinian people."
"The gunning down of young Israelis at a music festival is an image the world will not soon forget," said Sanders.
While President Joe Biden and lawmakers on Capitol Hill have pledged their unwavering support for Israel in the wake of the attack, Sanders argued that the US must also "insist on restraint from Israeli forces attacking Gaza."
Sanders is among the most prominent Jewish politicians in America, and during his presidential campaigns in 2016 and 2020, he was notably far more critical of Israel than most Democrats. He has also previously called for placing conditions upon American aid to Israel, an idea that's radioactive in Washington.

In fact, there is a likely scenario for escalation here if Israel attempts to block humanitarian support for Gaza from third-party countries via routes where Israel has no jurisdiction (i.e., Egypt or the Mediterranean Sea).

It is not easy to find population numbers for the Gaza Strip since it became a self governing entity in 2005.
Here what I have found:
2012 = 1.6 million population
2017 = 1.8 million population
2023 = 2.2 million population
This ‘open air prison’ must be a great place to live.
Especially for the Muslim terrorists from many parts of the world who can live in GAZA and be treated like little kings.

Gaza is Palestinian territory. It is not a prison. The Gazans chose Hamas to lead them in part because Arafat, while supposedly leading the Palestinians from his palace in Remallah, neglected the people of Gaza while Hamas received aid to feed the hungry and win them over from Arafat’s crew. Hamas could have built industry and tourism and agriculture and technology parks and desalination plants and gas pipelines from Egypt and Israel or tapped the gas off their shoreline. Instead they build tunnels and divert international aid to amass weapons and spread hateful murderous propaganda. Apparently Bernie Sanders is on their mailing list.
Gaza is Hamas’ problem, not Israel’s. Gaza elected them. Gaza needs to get rid of them and install a government capable of providing them their needs. Unfortunately Israel will have to soften the ground, with many more dead on both sides, so the Gazan people can retake control. Then we’ll see who they decide to vote for next.
Israel should offer to turn the water back on for a few days when Gazan people deliver the top 2000 Hamas leaders and their lieutenants, dead or alive... just drag them to one of the checkpoints.

Sanders is a buffoon. He, along with other reporters and commentators, are always ready to offer an opinion on international law or War Crimes”. Where did these people get their law degrees? How are they competent to give anyone advice on the subject of International Law? Israel and Gaza/Hamas are in a state of war, for which blockades are recognized as a legitimate tactic. Blockades were used in our Civil War, WW1, WW2, by the Soviet Union in ‘48 in Berlin, and most recently by Saudia Arabia against Qatar.
Did he happen to mention whether sending 5000 missiles into Israel and paragliding into a dance to kill hundreds was “violating international law”?
