USS Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group arrives in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea

The USS Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group arrives in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea in order to deter any actor seeking to escalate the situation or widen this war. The forces in the area include the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78), with its 8 squadrons of attack and support aircraft, and the Ticonderoga class guided missile cruiser USS Normandy (CG 60), as well as the Arleigh Burke class guided missile destroyers USS Thomas Hudner (DDG 116), USS Ramage (DDG 61), USS Carney (DDG 64), and USS Roosevelt (DDG 80).

Efforts to increase U.S. posture continue, including the rapid movement into theater of U.S. Air Force F-15s, F-16s and A-10s to augment existing fighter squadrons in the region.

"The arrival of these highly capable forces to the region is a strong signal of deterrence should any actor hostile to Israel consider trying to take advantage of this situation," said General Michael "Erik" Kurilla, commander, U.S. Central Command.

From a video report I saw from the region, Israel has a screen of submarines between Gaza and the Ford.

Syria just started lobbing rockets into the golden heights. This is starting to spiral…….

>Big difference

I suppose we could argue semantics but they are essentially the same thing; both utilize em induction to move a chunk of metal from point a) to b) with the difference being that the railgun’s projectile is not captured as it is in the case with a motor. The current used to move the puck connected to an aircraft must be immense.

There was an excellent PBS NOVA on a really long time ago showing some of the early railgun development at MIT. Mad scientists in action.

I just wondered if they would evolve the design

No ... they went "all in". I hope they were right; that's a BIG chunk of my tax dollars for the ship and a whole lot of sailors and naval officers I'd like to see come home in one piece at the end of the mission.

BTW, the next two are already under construction at Newport News.

I did a tour as a Cat Officer decades ago.

Salute!

Prayers for his safety, and of his shipmates.

Biden is “Commander-in-Chief”.

Makes me wonder whose side he will be fighting for.

Hopefully Biden doesn’t give it to Hamas when it docks.

Yes, and they both use em induction. I’ve seen different implementations of the railgun which use successive electromagnetic coils, very similar to your second illustration. The physics is essentially the same.

I get it that you guys are conversant with naval weapons systems but drop the ego. Why are you talking about this stuff in a public forum which our enemies would have easy access to, specifically the Chinese and the NORK’s? I’m sure they could use the knowledge you possess against us. Loose lips sink ships. That’s all I’m gonna say.

From the wiki page from which you obtained the image:

“A railgun (also spelled rail gun) is a linear motor device...”

Like I said, semantics :)

And my son is leaving soon .... they were supposed to relieve the Ford and will now be going in support.

I starting to get the feeling after 30 years of almost continuous operations the US voters are finally waking up to the game being played on us.

Hope it doesn’t fall down stairs.

I'm going to take a minute and laugh at that, then I'll come back all serious and stuff.

I know one thing... Right out of the gate the Israeli and U.S. propaganda is shaping up to be a scam for funding and arms and kickback money laundering. Let me put this into perspective. It doesn’t make any sense at all.

The IDF is one of the best trained and best armed militaries in the world for it’s size. They wrote the book on military intelligence. They have one of the best pinpoint airstrike and missile capabilities. They are on the same technological level or better as the U.S. with tanks and armament that they themselves produce. We now have an aircraft carrier group parked just off shore of the Gaza strip. All petroleum, water, food, and electricity has been cut off. All escape is blocked and they are bottled up.

Yet the story is that this war may take a year or more to win. WHY???

The Gaza strip is only 25 miles long and 3.7 to 7.5 mi wide. They should be able to occupy and clear Gaza of Hamas in two weeks with these extreme asymmetric conditions. Tell them they can come get food and water at the check points and all innocent parties will come running in mass to give themselves up. Those who remain are guilty, just walk through in a week and take them out.

There is absolutely no reason it should take over one month at most.
