FDA rules TODAY that ingredient in Benadryl and Sudafed from pharmacy shelves don't work

A Food and Drug Administration panel today unanimously ruled that a medicine used by millions for a stuffy nose does not work.

Phenylephrine is the most common active compound in over-the-counter drugs like Benadryl Allergy Plus Congestion, Sudafed PE, and Tylenol Cold and Flu Severe Day & Night.

But an FDA panel said after a two-day review that the oral decongestant ‘is not effective’ at standard or even high doses.

Their ruling is not binding but it strongly suggests that the agency could soon heed their advice and pull its approval, which would force companies to pull or reformulate their products.

The ingredient is protected under the FDA’s Generally Recognized as Safe and Effective (GRASE) designation, but a reversal of its approval could mean manufacturers including Bayer and Johnson and Johnson might need to reformulate.

I found out the hard way that stopping it cold turkey wasn't pleasant.

That's why I stopped morphine the instant I could after more-or-less healing up from an exploded pancreas...

I've tried melatonin in various doses but it did nothing for me. I thought I had an allergic reaction to some new medication which caused extreme itching on my back and torso so my niece suggested I try the Benadryl. The itching would subside somewhat at night but it really helped me stay asleep longer.

I still have the itching after switching medications so it wasn't an allergic reaction.

"You would think a headline writer for an English publication would be skilled in English grammar."
Daily Mail is about the only one I read. I sometimes suspect they put a booboo in the headlines to attract comments and give their readers a smug sense of superiority. There's a quote about that from some long-ago writer, I forget who (maybe Mencken).

I had a boss in 1993 who amused me with his medication dilemma. He said, "I can breathe or I can pee". Tough choice.

bullshit headline: Benadryl itself is nothing more and nothing less than branded Diphenhydramine, an antihistamine.

apparently Benadryl Allergy Plus Congestion contains Diphenhydramine AND Phenylephrine ...

In other news, the FDA says that water no longer reason for “wetness”.

Itching, watery eyes have been a problem for me. Benedryl fixed the watery eyes. Freshly laundered sheets and blankets (clean of dog fur) resolved the itching.

Benadryl works on food allergies, insect bite allergies, sinus. Let the people decide.

Tried that and even switched laundry detergents and shower soaps. No relief.

The FDA should be outsourced to Consumer Reports.

Agree with the first part ... but not to Ralph Nader's merry band of leftist idiots.

Sudafed PE is the placebo version.

Plain Sudafed still has pseudoephedrine — depending on your state you often have to ask to get it since it may be kept behind the counter.

Wait. My bottle of Benadryl says the active ingredient is diphenhydramine, not phenylephrine.

Yep, “Sudafed PE” (phenylephrine) is the OTC replacement for regular Sudafed (Pseudoephedrine)...doesn’t work in my experience, I go for the real thing, but thanks to Meth Heads you have to show ID to buy the real thing (Pseudoephedrine).
