Electric car drivers should have more expensive insurance premiums to cover the cost of fires which are harder to extinguish, according to an MP.
Conservative Greg Smith, who serves on the Transport Committee, said electric car owners should pay for the risk of fires through their insurance, saying fire services were having to spend seven-figure sums on submersion tanks for the burning wreckage of the cars.
He said: “It doesn’t take a genius to work out that a seven-figure capital expenditure on one of these things, by the time every car on the road is battery-electric, even if you have 0.1pc setting themselves on fire you’re going to need more than one tank.”
Mr Smith said the taxpayer would end up footing the bill for the fire equipment but that it should be insurance companies paying out.

“You should know by now that that’s not how things work (or don’t work) in this, the Obamanation Part II. Insurance rates will resultantly skyrocket on the rest of us responsible, law-abiding, sane, sensible and frugal Americans (otherwise labeled as White Supremists)... to pay for the rampant and unbridled stupidity of everyone else, including the millions of “new drivers” coming across the border daily.”
Absolutely. Just one EV burns up and the insurance rates in a whole “zip code” area doubles. They have been playing that “High risk area, guilt by association” scam for years and years. And it should be criminal. In no way should everyone in a zip code pay more for something that was not their fault.
“In no way should everyone in a zip code pay more for something that was not their fault.”
Have you noticed... that even if/when shopping for a medicare advantage plan or ANY government program... they first ask you for your zip code to see if you “qualify”. Ever wonder why that is?
That is, if I'm correct that car insurance is regulated at the state level, not the federal level.
Great video—insurance companies are going to start paying attention.
In Texas they’re now learning that they, too, have to pay the road tax.
“In all seriousness, I bet any insurance changes like that will vary by state. Maybe the Dims run state regulations for car insurance will force ICE owners to pay more to “help” EV owners, but not conservative states.

If you have your insurance with one of the national companies, which I do.... the rates go up nation-wide. State Farm just went up on my auto insurance, despite my having made no claims, getting no tickets and having no accidents in three decades. Why? Because they can.
BAN electric cars!!!!
Show some courage, and compassion for the poor consumer!!!!
They can call it the gullible tax.
My insurance went down, however, on my new car (bought last year). It has full coverage. I chalked that up to depreciation.
“In all seriousness, I bet any insurance changes like that will vary by state.”
Not just state by state, but by zip code. But not from government, from the private insurance companies themselves. It is a pricing scam based on “local Demographics”. But why should one customer pay more than a customer right across the street because they happen to be different zip codes?
“My insurance went down, however, on my new car (bought last year). It has full coverage. I chalked that up to depreciation.”
I would have chalked it up to divine intervention and/or a vatican-sanctioned miracle. That has never happened to me.
“Have you noticed... that even if/when shopping for a medicare advantage plan or ANY government program... they first ask you for your zip code to see if you “qualify”. Ever wonder why that is?”
It is greedy marketing and price gouging. “Average income” demographics. It is the same greed with everything. Pricing depends on the average income level of that zip code. And/or local regulation that could prevent the service.
That was one thing Sam Walton figured out and was fair about which helped make Walmart take off like a rocket. Same price for everything everywhere no matter where in the country.
It’s been over 3 decades since the last time I bought a new car (and, therefore, got full coverage). But I seem to recall the last time my insurance going down over the first 5 or so years like it did recently for my new car.

You obviously didn’t use State Farm. And I realize that insurance companies vary in what they provide vs. what they charge. Case in point... the black homeowner behind my house left his propane cooker on while he went off to work on a major holiday two years ago. Low and behold, there was an explosion and a fire that sent plumes of smoke throughout the house, making it unsalvageable (supposedly). So this guy gets the house bulldozed and rebuilt...only larger and with an extra top story, to boot. A brand spanking new home.... bigger and better than the old one... and all thanks to having good insurance despite being negligent.
I call that rewarding bad behavior, since I figure my homeowners insurance has gone up multiple times because of someone else’s negligence and stupidity...as has my auto insurance. But it seems that some folks can fall into vats of crap and come out smelling like roses. I’d have probably ended up homeless.
Alabama is not the most Woke state. Many liberal states give tax breaks for buying an EV, allow EV to use HOV lanes for one person, and provide free electricity to recharge. These states wouldn’t dream of charging EV more.
Also, the manufacturers are going to price in larger profits on ICE cars to offset losses on EV cars.
“”allow EV to use HOV lanes for one person””
In Kalifornia, they ‘allowed’ hybrids like the Prius to use the HOV lane. The politically correct car, don’t ya know. A few years later, the government that giveth, taketh away, and no more HOV lane for the Prius. More than a few Prius owners were up in arms, furious. They only bought the darn contraption to be able to use the HOV lane.
Drive down any Interstate highway and you will see melt point where gas cars caught fire.
As for EVs I think GM Bolt/Volt owners might need to pony up more.
But this is your standard FUD/Attack against that is not warranted against EVs.
Yes, gas is expensive mostly because of all the taxes added over the years. Don’t blame that on EVs.
If you don’t like EVs, then don’t buy one. If you don’t like taxes or regulations, bitch to your elected representatives or vote them out.
But judging from car sales so far this year, the EV revolution has begun. It will not be overnight and I do not like mandates forcing people into things.
Let the market decide. Even without the $7500 tax credit, Tesla’s will still be selling at the speed of their manufacturing capacity.
If you haven’t noticed, US car makers ha e given up on affordable cars and are almost exclusively mid to large SUVs & trucks.
Are they all kicked off? I thought the long-term owners were grandfathered in.
Not sure where you got that idea. I did business with Walmart buyers, and had meeting with store directors, district managers, regional mangers for 25 years.
They all said we are always cheaper than our competitors.
Once they ran them out of business, they raised their prices.
“Not sure where you got that idea.”
Years and years of shopping at and pricing Walmarts all over the country since they started. Even right now many things at Walmart are actually cheaper than the 99 cent store.
