Funnel spotted in DC, microburst reported in NYC as severe storms sweep Northeast, mid-Atlantic

Scattered severe thunderstorms are pummeling parts of the mid-Atlantic and Northeast Wednesday afternoon, including much of the major I-95 corridor cities of New York, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., bringing heavy rains, strong winds, frequent lighting and even a sighting of a funnel over the Washington Capitol.

Some of the severe thunderstorms could bring wind gusts of 60-70 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

On Tuesday afternoon, a funnel was spotted above the US Capitol building in Washington, D.C. The funnel did not pose any risk to the area.

“That is not a tornadic situation,” said FOX Weather meteorologist Jordan Overton. “It doesn’t mean there was a tornado. It just means you get kind of spinning, some shear in the atmosphere that are usually kind of really skinny, and they’ll be kind of dark in color. They look really scary, but they’re not actually tornadic.”

Just because it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, doesn't mean it actually is a duck.

A microburst is a sudden, powerful burst of air within a thunderstorm that sinks rapidly in a column of air known as a downdraft, then as it hits the ground, air is forced outward in a burst of strong winds.

Imagine a thunderstorm with a huge updraft in the center. You are keeping a literal ton of moisture hanging in the air, turning into hail and ice. Suddenly, a whole storm just dumps over you when the updraft ends.

It’s extremely damaging. It’s like you get a whole monster storm dumped on top of a 5 mile diameter area, all at once. 5-8 inches of rain just drops in 2 minutes.

After the tornado crushed the Pfizer plant in North Carolina, perhaps some “events” outside the control of little men, us and them alike, might be evidencing themselves? It's a thought....

There are actually three different types of microbursts - wet, dry, and hybrid. Microbursts concentrate intense winds dropped from the sky, straight down, covering an area about 2.5 miles or less in diameter. They can produce wind speeds up to 150 miles per hour and can cause significant damage.

WOW! Lucky there were no ‘straight line winds’ on top of the microburst with all that climageddonish WEATHER.

Microbursts are pretty awesome but they aren’t caused by a bunch of woke, broke environmentalist wackos looking for government grants. They have been around forever. A huge one hit the airfield at Fort Hood back in the late 80s and wiped out a bunch of helicopters. And I mean a bunch of helicopters.

Yes, most people don't know about microbursts and don't have much of a reason to but pilots do.

Just like the image here depicts, they can be hell to fly through. In this scenario, the plan is traveling toward the microburst and encountering the lateral (head) wind and with their flaps on will experience a sudden lifting. If they compensate for it to try to maintain their glide slope to the runway, and then fly into the downdraft, they will not only be driven downward but they will already have been trying to reduce altitude and get slammed into the ground.

I believe something like this happened several times and many airports have radar that specifically look for this kind of turbulent airflow
