A common co-morbidity of many diseases from covid to diabetes to pneumonia is obesity. Both Black, white and Hispanic Americans are obese. Both men and women are obese. Both R and D are obese.
We can’t blame anyone but ourselves.
There are specific subgroups that are not so obese. Seventh Day Adventists come to mind. They have a healthy life style.
Primarily Alcohol but also legal and illegal drugs, promiscuous sex are another grouping. Alcohol and car deaths, alcohol and crime deaths, alcolhol and stupidity deaths and on and on. Whereas obesity kills people in their 50s and beyond, alcohol (and equivalent drugs) kill many their teens,20s and 30s.
Without accepting these two facts, we cannot change longevity.
I think it has to do with where the medical facilities are. I mean Boston, Chicago, NY and others have the places where great medical schools and hospitals are located. Allows for states near by to take advantage. Kentucky and Arkansas are not a bastion of the best hospitals in the country.

1) Racial demographics changing. For whatever reason (probably behavioral differences), whites have longer lifespans than blacks and Hispanics. Plus, the white percentage of the population is declining.
2) More single parent households.

I think we can also thank the years of the food pyramid being the nutrition guideline schools were made to follow and that many people held to thinking it was healthier. This contributed greatly to rising rates of diabetes, heart disease, obesity, metabolic syndrome, and poor immune systems.

Absolutely true. Obesity is a huge problem in the US. I just got back from Europe and the difference in body shape between Americans and Europeans is pretty appalling.
