If struggling Disney had any hopes of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny breaking even at the box office, those hopes were dashed this weekend, as the fifth and final Harrison Ford swashbuckler fell to second place in the U.S. and Canada after just one week.
According to Variety, Patrick Wilson’s fifth installment in the Insidious series knocked Indiana Jones off the top spot with a $32.6 million debut on 3,188 screens. Dial of Destiny earned just $26.5 million on 4,600 screens.
Do the math: Indy earned about $5,760 per screen while Insidious: The Red Door did nearly double that at $10,226.
That’s a lot of empty seats for an Indiana Jones movie in its second week in theaters.
Indy cost $300 million to produce, not including an additional $150 million in marketing expenses, and it isn’t likely to break even, even after video sales. Disney won’t be able to recoup any costs on streaming sales, either, since their own properties stream exclusively on the studio’s multi-billion-dollar-losing Disney+ streamer. Dial of Destiny had been expected to lose somewhere between $200-$250 million before its massive, second-week 56% box office decline. In contrast, last year’s Top Gun: Maverick mega-hit fell off just 33% in its second week.

The local theater has cut the number of Indy screenings down around 2/3rds by my estimate. And they still are drawing a half-dozen a showing - at least, reserving seats.
Like most fans of the trilogy, I wasn’t asking for a sequel. Not the 4th and certainly not a 5th! But they COULD have done it right - made Indy a successful but retired guy, give him a reason to come out of retirement (Mutt or Short Round needing help), emphasized his experience and resourcefulness and let the younger guys handle the action, and...have a woman in the film that young men would WANT to know, rather than a harpy from Femi-Nazi hell acting like She-Bi%&$ of the Universe.
Indy could have been the optimistic, sarcastic guy who never gives up and be an inspiration to the younger guys in the film.
Instead...sigh! Indy and the Feminist of Doom! Because no guy can EVER equal ANY woman in anything....
Jones’s not Jones’.
Heh! Good one!
It will require almost $800MM just to break even. It looks like it will be a bigger bomb than anyone had any right to hope for.
Either is acceptable. Jones’ is the preferred.
A good article; thanks for posting it.
That bad?
Yellowstone - what a POS that was.
Couldn’t get past the first few episodes of the fake indian wench running her mouth.
I thought it was great, saw it with my 70yr old parents for the 4th of July. It was at least way better than 2008 Crystal Skull
I mean yeah there was a girl character or two but it didn’t feel “woke” to me or in your face bout it. And it wasn’t cringy or predictable
It kind of had grouchy old man theme like Clint Eastwood or something
I think sometimes folks let the actors/directors personal opinions guide the public opinion of their work…. Even if its not woke trash so to speak. Ive not seen it, but i love these films and im sure i will.
Indy 5 destroyed by Insidious 5. Hwood continues to beat long dead horses for diminishing returns.
Third is the best one.
Quote: “And we really didn’t see any “woke” aspect to the movie.”
Other than old decrepit Indiana Jones being told (repeatedly) what a miscreant and fool he is by
THE STRONG FEMALE LEAD!!!
No, no woke at all. And that female lead sure was the smartest, most perfect, most physically capable heroine ever. That Indiana was useless. Why did I ever like a movie with such a useless man in it?
So no, no woke.
The film was rewritten after earlier screenings. Still going to lose a couple hundred million.
‘The Force is Female’...
Classic woke bait and switch.
They use a hero with cache. They get you in, then pull the rug with THE MESSAGE. They did it with Star Wars. Now they do it with Indians Jones. And isn’t it just a coincidence that every time you get a new, perfect, flawless female character who has ZERO arc. They are perfect, never struggle, learn things like the Force effortlessly and scold the evil men throughout.
I only saw the first one, and only once, when it came out.
Do the later ones star Harrison Ford? I thought he only played a supporting role or a cameo.
I thought the main star was a black and/or a woman. I'm not kidding, I really thought that.
