It’s like a bunch of Confederate soldiers of the CSA saying they just completed the defense of the South after Lee’s surrender.

I do have sympathy for these troops, who are fighting a war that is more about money and dirty politics than the Ruskies invading. But then again, what war as of the last few decades has been been such?

Its about supporting Ukraine to win militarily, or not. By having self imposed limitations (western tanks, long range missiles, planes), the West showed it was not seriously trying to achieve a Ukrainian win.

I think Zelensky is probably telling the truth. I suspect Russian artillery has eliminated what used to be Bakhmut, and the Russians have named the rubble pile after a city that used to be located in the vicinity in Stalinist times.
Looking at the wider picture of the war, whether the Russian or Ukrainian statements about this site are most accurate is getting lost in the weeds.

Kinda true that no one is occupying the ‘city’. There is no city to occupy, just a wasteland of ruin that needs to be plowed under and planted with native flora. The pictures make Stalingrad photos look good. The man is governing rubble and the russians have enough explosives nd the will to turn that entire country into the sane garbage pile. They seem to be the epitome of the ‘if we cannot have it, no one can have it’ bunch.
